What job is suitable for Aspie ?

Take me for instance, I am 26 now.

As an Aspie, I have very few friends.

My major in University is Biology.

But after graduation, I found that I am so interested in Computer Science.

So I go to work at a PC vendern (Asus, HP etc..), as a technical support engineer.

I found I want to try new things, comparing to my other NT collages.

They may be more focus on one thing.

And their adaptability is much stronger than me.

So, I am wondering, which job is suitable for Aspies ?

Scientist ? I know many scientist is Aspie.

I mean a job that can unleash Aspie's advantange.

Maybe because of the Asperger, it made me more professional than other collages,

And the many things are not difficult for me, comparing to other NT people.

I can understand the things and process quickly because I have a graphic memory.


I think work in big company, as a white collar, is a bit boring.
And due to the personality problem, it is very hard for me to be promoted as a manager.

I even think about to create a magazine for Geek as my job.
But I do not know whether people will buy this magazine.

Any one can share your experience with me ? Any suggestion ?

A lot of us aspies end up working with computers. I've been a programmer for nearly thirty years! Difficult in a white collar environment though - too many rules and team working etc.

The Geek magazine sounds interesting but I think you would have very stiff competition from all the free geek related news and information on the internet. Geeks don't like to pay for something if there are plenty of good quality free alternatives.

I've enjoyed delivery jobs a lot (first theatre tickets and then pizza), they seem to suit me perfectly, minimum social contact, easy task, no boss on your neck, and sometimes you also get some tip, which is not the norm here.

Haha, I have a delivery job, too! It has it's positives and negatives. What about doing research for a living? Working in academia or for a research company. That is what I am setting up to do in physical anthropology. Consider grad school?

Software engineering FTW.

If I ever start my own software development house, I will have a staff entirely consisting of aspies. It will be amazing.

I recently started going to college for IT. A lot of aspies seem to work with computers in some way.

Most of the traditional 'professions' are almost tailor made for aspies.

Accountants, lawyers, actuaries, engineers are all occupations for the superfocused (although granted there is a bit more 'team work' involved with some engineering disciplines)

Scientists and University professors seem to be good repositories for the socially challenged too.

It depends on the individual.

Start your own business on whatever you're good at. You good at programming? Start a software company. You build computers? Manufacture and sell them (though there'll be less money and higher costs in that). You get the idea.

I truly think that's better for Aspies, mostly because you can work on what you like, and it's a lot more independent.

I've been a computer programmer for 16 years now, after some other jobs did not work out. It helps that a certain amount of eccentricity is almost expected from IT/Computer people.

I would not suggest becoming a university professor, though. Part of my time as a programmer has been at universities, and I also have a relative who is a professor. Politics and other interpersonal BS are pretty bad in academia. Working in IT at a university is not bad.

That's just my own experience, though. I happen to be good at logic and problem-solving, so programming and troubleshooting suits me.

The best job for an Aspie is the one you would be doing anyway, even if no one was paying you to do it. Whatever interest or obsession you have that keeps you fascinated and preoccupied for hours on end - that's what you need to pursue as a career, or turn into a business. Anything else will eventually become a living hell. And probably sooner rather than later.
