okay, here's the deal. i got fired today. it's weird because even though i knew i didn't like the job anymore for about the last month or so, getting fired still made my stomach tie into a knot. Funny thing is i KNOW i didn't like the job. what's the deal with that? I mean if I know i hated the job, then being fired shouldn't be too much of a event right? it should have been a picnic. i should have brought sandwiches for the HR person.

i'm the kind of guy who actually prefers to being fired than quitting. quitting for me is not an option and i stick with something if i start it. i'm still trying to wrap my mind around that one, most people hate being fired. I guess in my gut I still do, but....ok i don't know where this is going but weird huh?

Maybe you took being let go as a kind of personal rejection?

I always feel very free when I lose (or quit) a job. Then again, I always have had a support network, and more recently, savings, so maybe I'm one of the lucky ones.

The first job I quit, I think, was a crappy telemarketing scam that I felt good about leaving, and on both of the first 2 times I was let go I was about to quit anyway for school purposes, so I've had very positive associations with leaving a job.

I hope this hasn't left you without the means of supporting yourself. If you're okay, then I wish it doesn't sound trite for me to say "think of the positives".

Since you asked.......

I'd say don't be concerned with the self-analysis right now. Focus on getting another job so you can get a paycheck coming in. I'm assuming you're not living off a trust fund.

I say this because of something my philosophy professor said, "Sometimes you have to quit analyzing yourself and just live."

Maybe it was the short notice and a disruption to your routine?

Were you fired as such, or made redundant?

I was made redundant in January. To find out I was being made redundant was great news and a wonderful day. That's how unhappy I was in my job.

I now have a new job and although it hasn't been easy settling in, things should be OK.

thanks everyone for the replys. it took a couple of days for the news to reallly sink in. i should be ok since i had some savings left over from my previous job. i also took some time off to travel to boston just to relax and get my head straight (i'm from new york).

one thing i realized is that, getting fired from a job, it's really just an opportunity for a person to figure out what he/she is fit for and to really think through his/her life. that way, the event doesn't become all that depressing.
