I am currenty serving in AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) in a regional office of education in Illinois, USA, improving educational opportunities for all ages. AmeriCorps, for those that are not from the United States or the ones that are from the United States, but never heard of it, it is more or less a domestic version of the Peace Corps with the goal of eliminating poverty. Members are paid a living allowance for household expenses with health coverage, life insurance, child care allowance, and mileage are included. According to their rules, this does not affect Social Security or public aid benifits at all. In order to join, one must be either a US national/citizen or legal resident. I am doing this because I want to help people and help me to get a chance of gaining a better job that will help support a family.
