Is it possable for me to join? I am really considering enlisting for various reasons.

Right now getting a job out of college locally isn't going to happen as there's no jobs, getting a job is hard... you need a four year degree and 4 years of experence in that field. College is looking bad, and I just want to do SOMETHING hands-on. Sitting through lectures is very hard.

I served in the US Navy Submarine Force for 6 years. My AS was a non-issue to my recruiter and subsequent doctors at MEPS. It was a great controlled environment for me and I had a blast. Now going through college on the GI Bill. You must first find out if you are ready for a career term in the military, given the current world situation. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Friend, I suggest avoiding the military. You like doing things your own way? Well in the Navy you won't be allowed to... in fact you won't even be a person, you'll be a thing. Trust me, I know... I enlisted in the Army for 2 years, and had it worked out I would've floated by on the G.I. Bill too, for basically doing 24 months of BS. The problem I ran into was that there are so many people, and they are so stupid!

Here's a synopsis of my attempt:

Just out of high school (3 months), home life stunk
Went to an Army recruiting station, I considered it a good idea at the time
Recruiter was all happy an excited, made it seem like a good idea
I went through all the testing, etc... I was told I could be in the infantry
Afterwards someone other than my recruiter talked with me, he told me I couldn't be in the infantry because I didn't score high enough on 1 part of the test even though my recruiter said I would. In short this new person was much less nicer, he tried forcing me to join for more than 2 years, he knew I only wanted money for college + to get away from my parents. He did everything he could, tried offering money, making it seem like it was pointless to join if only for 2 years, etc... I felt extremely sick by then, and although I had reservations I still joined (but only for 2 years). This stupid jerk wanted me to signup for 5 years, offered me like 10,000 all I could think was "yeah, if you're willing to pay me that much you must be desperate".

Once I got to training I basically fiddled around and got out, it took around 2 months and I was beyond lucky that some others felt the same way, if it had only been me I don't think they'd ever have let me go :-Z I had like 4 other guys all trying to get out, and thank god.

Now what's funny, when I got there they made us swear never to leave, 1 guy though did go home, he skipped out, lmao Later when I was leaving he'd returned to face whatever they would do to him, but it's sick to me...

They said if we ever left AWOL they'd kill us, that it was an offense like that. I could hardly believe them, such mindless puppets and thoughtless fools.

Never join, it's a big mistake.

Now suprisingly a lot of people fel like the post above mine, whether AS or not. I'm in the Army. I've been in 5 years, I know a Navy aspie too. I have a friend who just retired after 24 years and I believe she's an aspie. The point is, the Army is a different animal fom the Air Force. The Airf Force is more concerned with education, community service and loyalty to the president. The Army can be a cut throat place whee everyone is out to feel like the big man in charge. If you don't look people in the eye in the Army they often feel disrespected and will do all that is in their power to take you down. In the Air Force you have to be open. Let pople know, I'm not anti social I'm just wired a little differently and eye contact is difficult, because the Air Force is a VERY social place. I know this because I work in a multi-service enviroment. I work closely with Navy, Marines, Air Force, Army, even Coast Guard! Ask me more if you want.

The goal of military is to wear you down through discipline and beat your ass into a fine, no thinking machine!

Having said that, if you DO join, know that you MAY go to battle and you MAY die. If you believe that dying for everything your leaders TELL you to die for is super, then join and don't ask questions.

Honestly, I think anyone who joins should join because they WANT to. Like being a firefighter or a doctor, you choose to do that. IF you need to keep reassuring yourself that this is a correct choice then maybe it is not.

I think anyone, aspie or NT, who is even remotely considering joining the armed forces needs to watch the movie Full Metal Jacket.

LOL. That movie still scares me and I've been ON deployments. I watched it before Basic Training too.

I don't know if you have an official dx or how this might affect you, since I never heard of AS at this time in my life.

I was in the Navy for six years, and it there were both good and bad things about it. One very positive aspect of it is the deployments, you have plenty of time to explore your interests. It also helped me make friends there, being stuck with the same people and learning their marrerisms and interests, and learning about them. The travel can be nice as well, seeing places you normally otherwise wouldn't.

Some of the negatives are boot camp is very boring, since all they do is give you simple information to remember and act like it is hard, giving you lots of time to study. Also, the eye contact and posture things can be terribly difficult, as well. It can be very annoying at times being treated like a robot instead of a person.
Also, as mentioned earlier, with the current situations, you would also have to think about going to places you wouldn't want to go to.

Finally, if you are light sensitive, I don't recommend it since everything is florescent lighting, and can be hell.
