I realized this week that I've been making a fatal error when it comes to job applications: I've been looking at job listings and thinking "Can I do this work and keep this job?" I should be thinking "Can I fake it for long enough to get this job?"

My version is the "80/20" rule:

Do I have 80% of the skills to hit the ground running, and can I learn the other 20% three months into the job?

When I was job searching, I came across an interesting statistic. It said that women only apply for jobs that they feel they fit 100%. Whereas men will apply for a job if they match only 60% of the stated requirements.

It spurred me to apply for jobs I didn't think I was qualified for up front for, but, would be able to pick up along the way.

Haha... ended up landing one of them. I'm introduced as the SysAdmin and someone asks me how long I've been using the program I support... and I have to look at the calendar to see how long I've been here. Of course, one of the jobs I was progressing through interviews and they actually gave me a test on coding a sql join query... something I had done once in a class two years prior. Epic fail. Of course, I told them I'd learn what I needed when I needed to (it was for data coordination across softwares)... and, that's true. I use SQL in my current job and I've picked it up as I went along. In the following 8 months that job remained open, I could've learned everything I needed to. :P

Oh, here's one of the articles that mentions that oh-so-motivating-to-me statistic...

That sounds like a good approach to take... ~nodding~

I wish I could have met Daria before Daria met her husband

Seriously: One is not going to be "fully qualified" for most jobs upon beginning said job. Some sort of training is invariably required, as said job always has specific characteristics not found in any other job.

Invariably, upon starting any job, one is a veritable "greenhorn."

It should be remembered, though, that many "greenhorns" (immigrants) attained, to a large extent, the American Dream (or equivalent).

I remember one job I applied for. They wanted sort of a link between the developers and support. This person would be delegating tasks, prioritizing them, etc... So in reality this person should know just about everything about the whole system. I asked them if there was a training period. Their answer was "no".

Yep...of course there are exceptions.
