A prospective employer asked me why I left my jobs.

I agree that you shouldn't lie. There are so many ways to say things.

Don't say, "It was boring"
I resigned to focus on finding a job that will use my skills and experience in a different capacity.

Or, "My boss was a jag-off"
I felt I would find more opportunities in an organized and professional company such as yours.

Whatever the reason is, you can spin the crap out of everything. Just look at how the news and politicians do it. These masters are hilarious.

I made a game for myself to handle retail work. I try to make customers smile. I would get more points when they were really pissed. I would do or say something goofy, or when I'd drop something, freeze looking at it, and say "Whoopsie Daisy", and then snatch it in a ninja stance. Sometimes I'd join them and say, "Your right, that sucks! What can ya do?" or, "It could be worse". My wierdness would somehow take their edge off. The part that makes this possible for me is that whatever happens, they will be gone soon, and you can then seek the next unsuspecting player (victim). :D

This is a question I will probably have to answer soon. I have been unable to work for the past 18 months, but hopefully I will be able to return to work later this year or early next year. I am hoping to circumvent the necessity by becoming self-employed as a piano tuner.

they're just asking you that question so you can incriminate yourself and then they will enjoy the privilege of not hiring you.

that question, and many other questions like that, is exactly how employers f*** with people. I don't know why workers let employers treat them like rats and rodents. you shouldn't be subjected to a criminal investigation every time you look for a work. because ultimately that's what it is, you are under suspicion for being a low life. and one way or another they're going to find you guilty on something.

and people wonder why capitalism doesn't work.

Duh

Asking why you left a previous job is a reasonable and predictable question -- preparing an answer for it makes sense.

Not all jobs and employers are horrible.

It looks more like a question asked to decide whether you are a horrible employee.

That's why it's an excellent question!

Why would an employer want to hire a horrible employee?

Non-horrible employees will likely have a decent answer to that question! Eg I was promoted, another company poached me by offering me a promotion, I went back to school after the summer, I quit to go back for a grad degree, my partner's in the military/dip corps/multinational corporation that transferred our family to here, etc.

I used to have a friend in HR. I asked her what you're supposed to say if you've left a company because you're trying to get away from something terrible, like sexual harassment, violence, embezzlement or whatever. She said, "there was an environment there that I wasn't expecting, that wasn't acceptable to me."

That looks suspiciously like badmouthing to me.

How about "It wasn't a good fit." Meaning, there was nothing wrong with the job, nothing wrong with you, but you and and the requirements or environment of that particular job did not work well together. Sort of like trying to put a square peg in a round hole.

^ This would be the best thing to say, but sometimes you can't avoid putting down that you worked somewhere and they might check your references.

For myself, historically, things like needing to or being required to move, car broke down & no longer had transportation available to work, assignment was scheduled as being temporary to begin with rather than permanent, the company no longer needed to hire for said work or the funding for previous companies got cut off, work was seasonal, I simply did not re-apply for the following year due to looking into other types of work in order to gain more work-experience in other industries, etc.
