Fire Alarms at Work
I worked for a metal finishing manufacturing company in their office for 8-9 months and I left that job because there were sort of frequent fire alarm tests due to the nature of the facility. These were happening randomly and unscheduled due to the fire alarm company having to come out and do work on the system whenever there was something up with it. It was a 150,000 square foot building with lots of noise anyway due to dumping screws and other things. Maybe the size of the building had something to do with this problem. While I was working there, I'd say this thing happened about 5 times or something like that. Whenever an announcement came saying that they would need to set off the alarms, I bolted out of my work station and either go outside or to another area within the building where they were not being tested. 1 time it was in the winter and I had stood outside for 30-40 minutes in freezing cold weather without my cell phone on guard cause I got out of there so fast that I forgot to take that with me. Thank goodness, I took my coat, hat and gloves with me!
They even held practice fire drills which were unannounced about once or twice per year. Luckily, I was never in the building when 1 of those happened!
I loathed this and I even made a suggestion saying that this type of thing should only happen off hours such as before or after office hours since the company ran 24/7 and some on the weekends as well. Well, the HR person said that they can not control when they need to work on the alarms because there could be trouble that may need to be fixed quickly rather than later. Due to them starting construction on an expansion of the building, I and them realized this type of thing may happen more often due to possible tripping of the system while they were constructing that new part of the building. So we decided that it was the time that I pack up and quit that job because it was getting too much with the unexpectedness and number of these fire alarm tests. Does anyone else have similar stories like mine?
So pretty soon, I am hoping and starting to look for a new job. I need 1 that will be in an environment where they will not do fire alarm tests or practice drills or in worst case, minimal. I want to work in an office doing computer and perhaps office-type work. Can you help me and give me areas where I could possibly work at with my skills and quiet environments along with my specific accommodations regarding this issue due to my autism?
Thanks!
my job just recently moved into a new building. we haven't yet done a fire drill...but right now i'm in too bright and noisy of an area. i'm struggling now....and hope to be out of this area soon....but it doesn't look too good for me...

i've been on vacation this week....and apparently...the other day (earlier this week)...they tested the fire alarm. and part of me feels lucky to have missed that....but the other part of me, the dreading and anxiousness is growing....

When I was ''living'' (trynna stay sane which didn't work) in a truly abysmal block of student accommodation flats during my doomed degree, they set off the fire alarm around once a fortnight, the sensory overload from being cooped up in that nuthouse was already dreadful but boy when that sucker shrilly bleep-blopped piercing my eardrums it was a terror alright! I ended up not bothering going out to the assembly lines after a few months of putting up with it and would rather have perished in a phantom blaze, nobody ever asked me about my absence anyhow.
