Job ideas for low high functioning autistics
Hello,
So, I didn't have enough space to type in the whole subject, but I'm just going to say it here. I saw online from a psychologist from the University of California-Berkeley, that people on the lower end of the high end spectrum, might need to narrow their jobs options. Now, I posted in this thread before, but didn't get this specific. Which, was a mistake. It may be shocking to you, but I have an IQ of 75. Five points away from being considered low functioning according to the DSM and that psychologist from Berkeley. So, I am high functioning, but I have a lot of limitations.
So, I will just say that I'm not a social person at all. I would rather work in the area of knowing what's needed for my job and communicating in job related areas, not in personal friendship levels. In addition, three years ago I was labeled mild/moderate mental retardation, or also known as intellectual disability disorder. With that, I have very low motor skills - ask for more details when given a task or ask for help explaining - easily taken advantage of - don't understand when people are using me or being manipulative/non-healthy behaviors towards me - do not understand relationships and how moods change - has a difficult time with a lot of complicated subjects (mathematics) - high anxiety rate - high depression rate and a few other things.
I was diagnosed at 10 with Asperger's syndrome. I've been in special education all my life and now I accept services from my college for my disability. In addition, I also have ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder, depression, and possible PTSD and Bipolar. If I don't take all my medications in the morning and at night, I will not function. With that, I would like to live an independent life and I'm showing signs of being able to do that. I'm in college working towards a associates of applied science or associate of arts degree. Transferring is something I've been looking into. Additionally, I recently came across that the federal government offers Schedule A hiring. It's specifically for people with psychiatric, intellectual, and or physical disabilities. You don't have to have a degree to get a job in Schedule A hiring and it's not competitive employment. You will receive assistance on the work place, such as personal coaching or asistive technology and other things. You can work in virtually any department you want. If your interested in travelling the world, you can work for the State Department. If your interested in perserving natural resources, working in the Department of Interior is good. If your also interested in space travel or study of planets, working for NASA is an option. I've been looking into this.
Lastly, I'm not sure what level of education I will end up with. I have an interest in government, writing, presenting, helping or advising, space science/astronomy, and history/geography/geology. Secondly, I like watching documentaries of this stuff and it turns me on. I like film and maybe even creating one. However, I just don't know where to go. I have a vocational counselor right now through the state I live in and were exploring things, but I just want an outside opinion. I may write this very well, but I have some impairments that probably will never leave me. In addition, I've also looked at psychology, because maybe helping people would be good. However, triggering negative memories from the past might greatly affect me. Overall, I just want to be happy and succeed and make a difference in the world. Lastly, I am an INFP/INFJ myers briggs type
Thanks,
Regards,
Tyler
