I am currently in university, majoring in Political science. I am hoping to go to get a masters, or maybe go into Law school (if I can beat out all the NT's with perfect marks, A type personalities, references, connections, good social skills, etc....). Anyways, I have read about jobs that are considered "good" for people with AS, and they are often research, accounting, engineering, library, etc type jobs, and I don't know how I can fit into that. I am sure I will be a sh***y lawyer if I can even get into that college (it just interests me is all), and I doubt I would be a good member of the bureaucracy, because of AS traits etc. I just picture myself either going into a very low paying job that I am over qualified for, or being forced to find a different vocational path and go into a trade just so I can make a decent living. I am almost 24, and if I go on to get a masters or law degree I will be aprox. between 28 and 30 years old by the time I am finished (if I do finish at all). I am scared that I will go out into the job field and realize that I can't go anywhere, and will need to either accept a job way below my abilities, or find another career. Thoughts?

If you stay in Political Science and study a lot of Arabic and Farsi, you could work for the CIA translating documents. There is a mountainous backlog of intelligence that still needs to be translated and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Wow showing your vulnerable side..eh. In stark contrast to your picture. Fairplay to you.

P.S. severe sincere good luck whatever you do!

There's a woman on another forum I'm on who went from chemical engineering to environmental law. She has accomplished an amazing amount by refusing to let self-doubt stop her from what she decided to do. I'm a fan. :D

The key is, no matter how you feel, make a decision and work your ass off to make it happen. If you feel worse, work harder until it goes away. Hell, if you got this far you've got some serious s**t to work with. I'm rootin' for ya!

I can sure relate! My social life and working career has just been a series of disasters! I think I'm going to need a job where I'm not surrounded by people all day... limited social interaction.

I bet you'd have a chance of getting into office. Just take a lot of speech and writing classes. Acting/Theater may also help.

Lelia's idea is good too.

Anyone can get a job if they want one bad enough.

Find an internship and work in the field you are interested in going into after college. You will see enough to know if you want to continue pursuing a job in that field.

Honestly, you can do any job if you just keep trying. Don't be disappointed if you don't find a job in your field immediately--many University grads don't. This happens with NTs as well--the paradox is that many employers are wary of hiring people fresh out of school as they have no experience, but how can they get experience if no-one will hire them? Just have a back-up plan and keep working towards your goals. An internship would be a great way to get your foot in the door, but that's not always an option. Or similarly, if you can find somewhere to volunteer and get to know people there, that could also be helpful. You don't have to make friends with them or anything--just have a good attitude and do a good job. That's how I made it in my career--I don't have any real friends amongst my coworkers, and many think that I'm odd; but they realize that I work hard and enjoy my job. It can be the same for you.

I understand your concern. I recently got my BA and my two majors were political science and history. After many months of checking the job listings daily, there have been exactly zero jobs anywhere near me that seek someone who even has a BA in either area or simply a generic BA (although there have been a few specific BA job offerings, like psychology/sociology/education I think).

It is, as others have mentioned, very hard to even get "generic" jobs (i.e. secretarial, office assistance, library assistant, etc), because they all want people "with experience", even though the education requirements are only usually a high school degree. People "with experience" seem to get hiring priority over anyone else who has more education! It is, obviously, quite demoralizing.

Luckily, I have zero college debt, so if I get stuck with a **** job I'll still be able to survive.

^^Bolded for truth... A lot of political science/history etc is quite theoretical (so are many other subjects, and business degrees), so it is not like we can go out and get a job as an "engineer" or "accountant." I have known a few people in my age range who graduated in the last couple years with BA's in Biology and finance (which I initially thought would be more practical degrees), and they both A) can't get a job in their field B)got turned down from more desirable jobs because they lacked "experience" and C) are making much less money than they expected. I also will be debt-free when I graduate, so I am not too worried about surviving either... at least we have that on our sides.

Do what you want to do. Don't let others force you and pigeonhole you into jobs that you may want to do. If you want to be an attorney, I say go for it. Don't let a DX of AS prevent you from pursuing your goals. Yes, you may have to work harder and spend extra time; but, if you want to be attorney, you can be one. You're just going to have to learn to overcome your weakness.
