We had a new coworker start about a month ago. Every so often, he'll play music. Loudly. No one else uses speakers except for this guy and I can't figure out why he thinks it's ok. I do rather complex technical work when you add in my AS, it's driving me completely out of my mind. How am I supposed to deal with this? This is my dream company and I dread going to work every morning now.

Have you asked your coworker if he could use headphones? Tell him you can't concentrate when he plays the music loudly and it gives you a headache.

If he objects, go talk to your supervisor/manager.

What he's doing is very rude!

If the music disturbs your concentration it is perfectly in order to tell him to stop.

If I'm doing repetitive work e.g. making off cable ends or something I enjoy music the louder the better but If I need to think e.g. programming, reading, writing then it just drives me nuts.

Not considering others is rude.

That is horribly rude and you shouldn't have to deal with it. You should definitely talk to your supervisor about it. I know I wouldn't be able to concentrate in an environment like that.

We have different supervisors. Which one do I got to?

Plus, what if he just turns it down and refuses to wear headphones? He just ordered a pair of speakers and they came into today so I think he's going to do this more and more. It's even worse for me when I can barely hear music and I know it bothers me more than most people. I just don't understand why he thinks it's ok when clearly no one else does it! Ugh, I don't even want to go to work.

ETA: And how do I ask him to stop? I already told the guy who sits next to him how much it bothers me, and it did stop for a while, but apparently not permanently.

I'd start with your supervisor and explain that the music makes it impossible for you to concentrate, so you can't do your job effectively. Then your supervisor should speak to his supervisor who should speak to him. No one should ever be allowed to listen to music without headphones in an office setting...that's just ridiculous! I hate office politics.

I think this is good advice.

It seems supervisors feel really good when you give them the opportunity to supervise. So long as you don't bring too much to them, your super will appreciate you "respecting their authority" and all that.

Still, I'd try a polite conversation with the offender first.

What type of office job do you have? Just wondering. Don't know what kinds of office jobs there are. s**t, I'm not allowed to listen to music period, I work in a grocery store.

Still, that is rude. It sucks how many people have no consideration, I get it all the time from customers at my store.

I know this. In the department where I worked before someone in the office next to mine always had the radio turned on. I couldn't concentrate, but I didn't feel like I could complain... I'm only the apprentice after all

btw, if I'm becoming an IT Specialist (Programming) is it called apprentice or trainee?
