I've asked questions along this theme before, but what do WPers/Aspies (yes, there is'nt a perfect corrolation there) bring to an employement situation?

Occasionally, Aspies are in positions to hire people, and I was wondering what sort of situations would be adventagous for Aspies at the proverbal employement table.

We're good at learning from and working a healthy interplay between theory and practice.

Where is the option for "Aspies are highly pragmatic and gets stuff done"?

I can only speak for myself, but I bring:

1. The ability to learn the job at speeds that typically get the response "Oh my God" from people.

2. The ability to focus on tasks for hours on end, even the boring ones, once I get into the rhythm of them.

3. The attitude that I'm at work to work, not to slack off.

4. Actually doing the job that I'm being paid to do, and not wasting time chatting constantly.

I can do things like tell the difference between Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, figure out if a plushie is clean enough to be given to a child, dress naked dolls, and wash sandbox toys. And those kinds of thing are good enough for the kind of work I do (I work in the toy section of a warehouse at a thrift store) :D

It depends on the person.

Some Aspies might be intensely focused on one skill and they may be the go-to expert for that one thing.

Others may have wide ranging skills and are adaptable to many facets of a job.

I was hired as a animator/ motion graphics designer but I can do a bit of programming when necessary. I'm good at solving technical problems. I can edit video if necessary. I'm a pretty darned good photographer. I can analyze problems and articulate solutions. I'm a decent writer. And when nobody else wants to do the job, I'll briefly stop my passive aggressive whining and get the thing done.

But probably what I'm valued for most is the fact that I don't need to take the credit for my work. I am happy to work in the background while other people are the "public face" of the creative effort.

Here's what I'll bring to the workplace (AS specific):

1. Intense focus on getting the job done/solving the problem, if it's clearly stated and has at least some stability. That's my top goal. NOT climbing as high as possible on the ladder (at least once I'm making enough to live on.)

2. Very willing to share knowledge and strategy for getting jobs done with coworkers. It's me AND them working TOGETHER on the project, not me VERSUS them to get the most credit. Sharing knowledge will HELP the company get the project done!

3. No matter how much people may talk about how "smart" I am, I keep my ego in check. Admitting I'm wrong when I realize I'm wrong, to me, is THE best way to learn the most stuff!

4. Excellent math and logic skills, which are two very key skills in programming.

5. I WILL NOT HESITATE to risk my own job to report (or get the word out on) someone's unethical behavior. (This is an asset only to companies that actually have a moral compass.)

Major problem in finding new employment. Most employers in my field expect everyone to be ladder climbers and won't even look at me since i focused on getting the job done and problem solving (and reviews show i am very good at that) and not moving into management within 5 years.

If I could edit the poll, I would put it in. It would have been my choice as well.

I'm a language arts, story, narrative type of Aspie, which means I can understand the case study approach used in medicine, business, law, and probably other fields as well.

I'd love a job in journalism if it was a growing field.

Depends a lot on the person, but I think in general people with AS may have particular interest(s) which would be an asset if related to the job. Also things like intelligence, able to get things done (possibly using routines), problem solving, attention to detail, reliability, able to abide by rules.

Let's say Aspie P has substanial influence over a hiring decision.....

And let's say that Aspie I is looking for a position in the relevant field....

How would P know to look for I's resume, and how would I know how to apply to P in the first place?

I know this post reads like a logic puzzle, but it's a question I've been puzzling over for a few months.

Heh.... we should put a tiny "AS" in the bottom corner like a secret handshake.

You see the issue then?

To make things worse, that solution only solves one half of the problem (P knowing what to look for), it does nothing to tell I that P is looking for such a resume.
