I would choose Kauai or the Big Island, because they might be cheaper than Oahu. I am not sure how expensive Maui is, compared to the other islands. And I have heard that Molokai is very sparsely populated, and not that many jobs there.

Alaska.

More emphasis on self-reliance. Natural beauty. Costs less to live there than Hawaii.

Hawaii is beautiful year-round, but lots of people (mostly tourists). Cost of living there is outrageous. Major welfare system going on because people who have average incomes are dirt poor in the way things are priced. Most everything needs to be imported, and the influx of wealthy people buying up what's available means nothing affordable exists for the locals.

Same deal happening in my area here on the mainland. People (retirees) from out of town used to high prices gladly pay the elevated home/land prices here because it's a bargain to them. This drives the prices up for everyone and the average person here can't afford a home.

It's expensive to live in Alaska as well. US postal workers get 25% extra wages for living there. Alaska is the biggest US state in terms of land size and has the smallest population.

In addition to the logistical problems, you also have to pay for heating (unless you want to freeze to death!).

@tim, i'm sleepy so will get back to this tomorrow, but i've lived seven years (except this year) on oahu, in honolulu. i've also been to the big island and maui. i'll be back in honolulu come april. i can answer some of your questions.

briefly: yes, differences in both things on different islands
milk: $4-6/gal, and not because of shipping (prices were set to "protect hawaii's dairy farms" but they closed them all as i was leaving).

welfare? same as cali, that one guy's mistaken (or his link is).

anyway, gonna hit the hay now. you can also pm me about it. i love hawaii and would enjoy answering questions.
