That's because people think "Unemployed" people aren't out looking for a job. They think they're sitting around watching TV (or on the Computer) all day doing 'nothing'.

They think that must be true because they think you should have a job already. And that if you're still looking, you're not trying hard enough. Or not lowering your standards for what you'll apply for, enough.

My father made a crack about how "no wonder you can't hold down a job, you don't finish anything"

Um, excuse me. I haven't had a job since 1996--my ONLY job in my life--and it had NOTHING to do with whether or not I could finish something.

After I lost that job, my mother pestered me to send in resumes like crazy. And I did. I got nowhere. Finally gave up in 2000 when we discovered I was autistic.

But they tell me not working is like a vacation, they say holidays don't mean a whole lot because there's nothing I'm taking a 'break' from, and tell me I don't do 'enough' around the house.

I completely agree! I've been unemployed for over a month- and I admit that it was my fault- but I hate being unemployed and would rather be working than to be stuck doing nothing! It makes me want to go back and relive the memories of how I supposedly pissed everyone off at work before I quit.

PS. That is precisely what my supervisor told me- My attitude pisses everyone off.

Suiseisen, I would suggest working PT for free until you find something. Also if you have a group like Collage in PA near you, it might be able to help you with this kind of situation. For Collage, they help people understand basic social skills and table manners and such from what I hear, and this might be very helpful. Not sure, please take no offense.

None taken. It's been over a month since I was told that and two days later, I quit because I felt insulted by it. I'll see if they have a similar program near where I live because I really need an income, even before this fall semester begins.

I don't get it at all. Looking for a new job is among THE suckiest things in life.

I will only say this...

I've been unemployed, and the first week of it is like having a vacation. No work, a chance to just sleep in and relax.

Of course, most times (recently) that I've been out of a job, the exiting of a stressful environment really meant I deserved a few days to myself to "decompress" from all I had been through.

I do not consider being unemployed (by itself) a vacation. A vacation means you have the money/means to enjoy what you want to do.

On Friday, I'm going to be laid off. I'm not imagining it's going to be a vacation, as I'm going to be stressing the entire time about money and finding a new job. How is that a vacation?

I can't stand those people. I think that they should be put to work, and sweat. I love working. I love making my own money. People like that, are an insult to people who really need to be on Social Insurance.

This thread reminds me of the Jet Blue flight attendant, but then I read that he "wanted" his job back later on, oh brother! Probably with a different airline company.

Yeah, when I worked at McDonald's they stuck me at the register because I was "cute." I didn't like that reasoning. I was okay wiht 95% of customers but the 5% that were a pain-in-the-ass threw me through a loop. I just wanted to slap them and say, "I've been trained, now shush and you'll get your sammich in a minute." I had a few meltdowns at work. I worked there for a total of 5 months and was told they "no longer needed my services." And if I wanted to know why, I would have to schedule a meeting with the boss-man. The boss-woman who hired me, loved me. She was transferred and we got this perfectionist a-hole. Most of the original staff isn't there anymore because of him. So yeah. Unemployment sucks!>.<

But I like being on vacation. I'm actually unemployed right now. I've put in a lot of hard work over the years and I think I'm due a vacation. God has always taken care of me and I'm not worried. I'll get a job when He's ready. Until then, its time to have some fun. Last saturday I went jet skiing and swimming in the ocean with a friend. So if you don't believe in God, then you should probably be worried.

Yeah... unemployment a vacation... It is harder spending 40 hours a week on an unproductive job search for 12 straight months on end than it is working a job those same 40 hours at a job

I agree. I do not look forward to my post-graduate job search starting in May at all. I hate interviews because I suck at answering questions on the spot. D:

I agree with that. Well, finallly think I might get somewhere for once after searching for a year. Granted Imma be getting lots of recommendations as well. If I get it, its hard work BUT pays really really good considering it starts at $20/hour

Damn. $20/hour?! I hope you get it. :D

I've been getting recommendations too. People at my mom's work have been asking if I graduated yet because they know of a place that could use my writing skills. I just hope that the search doesn't go on for too long, those bills don't pay for themselves. D:

Well, physical labor building trucks, not necessarily my thing, but I do need some income flowing to fix my own and my family's situation
