I don't know if they still do this, but in a lot of cities and towns, there is a specific place where construction contractors go to find day labor.

Private individuals will sometimes go there to pick someone out to do some work around their homes or yards.

Around here it's hardware stores, but it's only Mexicans out there. I haven't ever seen anybody of any other ethnicity out there waiting for work. I guess that a lot of them can't go to the labor places because of documentation, so they go where the contractors are.
