I've overcome the odds and gotten a job, and I'm miserable.

Enjoyment of my work and the hectic department I worked in weren't compatible. I worked in a service department of a machinery manufacturer, assisting customers with machinery issues. VERY hectic when upset customers were involved, which was often.

The change that improved things to the point of acceptability was my suggesting changing my work hours to begin and end 2 hours ahead of everyone else. This was no problem, for our afternoon office people, because afternoons were always slow anyway, and my starting early was a benefit to customers who needed early morning assistance with their technical problems. In fact, everyone thought I was a saint for volunteering to do this. In this early morning 2 hours I could accomplish 4 times as much than in the midst of the usual office uproar.

If I hadn't this degree of separation my working life would have been much less enjoyable; I'm quite sure I'd not have made it to retirement with the same company. I'm not suggesting this could, should or would work for everyone but I will suggest everyone, aspie or NT, could benefit from finding a bit of a quiet time to work in and avoid stress and recharge your "social battery."

Sometimes full time work, and the environment and requirements, are just really stressful for certain people (like me). One hope would be that with time, the stress of the new job would come down, you'll get more adjusted to the new routine and requirements, so that the stress level comes down, and you feel more back to normal. Alternatively, are there any triggers you can notice? Background noise? the lights? For me I hate fluorescent lights, I hate lack of privacy, and even the constant low hum of computers gets to me. Headphones, a longer lunch break, anything like that that could help you?
