There are times when a smile seems to be expected.

What seems to work for me is to look at a person and think of something positive about them. If you make a bit of effort, it's not hard to find *something* likeable about almost anyone. If you smile then, it doesn't look forced, because the smile itself is real, even though the circumstances are contrived.

As for smiling when I shouldn't... I'm still working on that one.

My Aspie Smile

I have a little secret I wear upon my face
I keep it very near to me in a most convenient place
I hope you do not guess it, you might take me to task
I take it out and put it on, it's my "normal" NT mask!

It keeps the world from pressing in, it makes me look like you!
I wear it so easily you won't believe that it's not true
I laugh and nod and make my mouth do what passes for a smile
I walk and talk and do the stuff that makes me rank and file.

But underneath the artifice, I am bored with all your talk
your gossip and your " he said she said" at all of this I balk;
you're constantly rattling on about the least of things
your husband's warts, your baby's farts, your last romantic fling.

you're on and on about the rights of "people of the pod"
and force your strict conformity on politics, style, and God
your wars are fought with no regard for innocence or youth
you're quick to point with fingers gnarled at what you see as 'Truth"

You surround yourself with your selves with mirrored nurons flashing
and if I pipe up with another view, I'm sure to take a thrashing
you'll turn on me and tell me off, in all your stupidity
you'll call me weird, and cast distrust 'cause I don't mirror your cupidity

But I bear it all with stoicism, and onward do I march
to keep lock step with all of you when inwardly I lurch
you rub me wrong, you irritate, you scrape my nerve ends raw
you contantly regail me with what you did and saw

So if I inwardly rebell against the draw of luck
and stifle yelling to your face, you idiot! you suck!
and out from the cracks the rebellion wells and oozes
pardon me, by the genetic crap shoot, YOU are all the bunch of losers!

Merle

I have thought quite a bit about my 'Aspie Smile'
so I hacked out this bit of doggerel

I wear it so easily you won’t believe that it's not true

I’m sure it’s very interesting, and I tilt my head just so
I don’t want to be left out, so I put on the show.
After all should I decide to let my Aspie out?
I could bore you too, and to TEARS, but thought of as a lout.

So when you’re on and on about the rights of "people of the pod*"
and force your strict conformity on politics, style, and God.
Mind games you play with no regard for innocence or youth
you're quick to point with fingers gnarled at what you see as 'Truth.’

But I bear it all with stoicism, and onward do I march
to keep lock step with all of you when inwardly I lurch
you rub me wrong, you irritate, you scrape my nerve ends raw

· Poetic license, so shoot me!

It happens. Server problems cause people to refresh. Sometimes it works fine (if the original message was lost), more often it ends up double posting.

I can only smile when I'm not self-conscious about it. Otherwise it looks fake.

Recently I took a photo of myself. i was smiling, I'm sure I was. But the photo showed me frowning. How the hell did that happen?

I have my frozen smile that a professor taught me in college. I had to train my face muscles just like body building. It works. People ask me how I stay so positive at work. But, I think it looks really dorky.

Gotta smile with your eyes too, to make it look real~
Before it was like I was just staring with a smiling mouth, and looked rather psychopathic/emotionless.

I've been noticing lately that often when I think I'm smiling I'm not. I never would have noticed if I hadn't found out I have AS. Now I'm a lot more conscious of these things. The day before yesterday I was getting on an elevator and a lady got off the elevator and gave me a smile as I passed her. I smiled back, but the interior of the elevator was all mirrored and I caught a glimpse of my face and there was actually no smile there- just a kind of wooden serious scowl. :(

My little brother, who is NT, says that when snapping a photograph you have a 4 second smile window before a natural smile turns into the "molester smile." The molester smile is that creepy fake smile you hold for photos, the kind that doesn't reach your eyes.

Why oh why do people wait 15 seconds before snapping a photo? They completely miss the natural smile window and make people in the photo look like a bunch of leering pervs

and who cares about smiling?
if its not sincere, then don't do it.
I know, we have to make a living, be nice, the inlaws, etc.
best advice:
move out of the USA.
in many countries people are not supposed to smile all the time.
get it
