It helps to keep them from being too tight. The real secret of that is to select your dress shirts a neck size or two larger so that they aren't so tight and then adjust the tie to the tightness you wish. If you dress shirts have a tight neck size, then it doesn't matter how you do your tie -- it will be too tight.
There is another option -- grow a beard. A big beard. Big enough to hide your collar so much that it isn't at all obvious just how much too big your collar is.
For example, if you pay attention to the collar of the fellow in this picture, it is rather loose. That tie is not uncomfortably tight.
