Anyone work Retail?
Lol, I just posted my similar retail thing in another thread. The [Poll] Have you been fired? one. Can't remember where it was for a link.
I worked for a year in the Gurnee Mills Mall at a store that sold my then current obsession, Games Workshop wargaming toy figures.
I did very well at it once I was able to get a 'script' worked out with how to approach those who would just wander in looking at the figures. Our goal was to introduce people to the game and hobby and basically play a quick demo game with them. We also talked with current players, suggested additional units to add to their collections, etc. I had an enthusiasm for the game due to it being my obsession that I think flowed to others.
I had extensive knowledge of the game and I like helping people out. I did have trouble closing the sale with those who were kinda on the fence. I did not feel comfortable pushing them to make the decision in favor of purchasing the game. I therefore had a harder time with those people that wandered in, but I was the most liked sales person by the regulars who came in every week as they knew I was not going to try and pressure them into buying something new, but would be able to offer advice, show them new things, etc...
I was fired from there because I refused to progress up the ladder to manager. I was doing everything a manager did except for hiring/firing already, but I didn't think I would be able to make good personnel decisions. After I was fired I became aware that I had accumulated a lot of stress working there.
Shortly after my obsession went into submission and had a brief resurgence, but currently lies dormant along with the thousands of dollars worth of figures in my closet.
I still look back fondly on that year and learned most of my coping techniques from there.
I've worked seasonal retail, and it's something I won't do again because some customers can be downright rude, especially right before Christmas. What I didn't like was that there were times when I was working in both toys and the seasonal (Christmas decorations) section, often on those nights, I was the only person in seasonal, yet I was expected to help in the toy department. I was actually relieved when the season was over and I was laid off.
Now that same store is hiring again, and even though the HR manager said that she'd rehire me, I have no interest in retail again. I'm making more money with temping, and am about to take a typing test for the city where I'd passed the written civil service test. If I get that job, I'll be making more than I ever would in retail, plus I'd be dealing with other employees most of the time.

i work in a supermarket tidying up the shelves i dont mind the job itsself but to be frank it's the dealing with people and putting up one of me bosses telling me that i need to get out more and find a woman(all cause i choose to either read manga or play me DS during my breaks) but if i get socal overloads at work i just take a St.John's Wort or 2 to kinda calm me down cause otherwise i may either end up being rude or i may just end up missing spots. the only reason why i put up with it is the money plus i cant stand the throught of another year on the blasted dole
