6. The world is stupid.

So, why am I still here, doing stupid work with stupid people for a stupid boss in a stupid organization in a stupid country in a stupid world? Because I'M stupid!! ! Wink

Yeah this pretty much sums it up.

Being forced to work on a project that is obviously a waste of time makes it almost impossible to stay on task.

Your boss is incompetant. There is literally no other way to describe him. You should be graded on overall productivity, not what you are doing at a given random instant during a day. There's a reason that's called an "OLD" management rule of thumb. Any good manager realizes the old whip cracking mentality doesn't work on competant professionals. I could be wrong here, but if he is doing walk by's to evaluate people, I would guess it is because he does not have any other meaningful way to do it. What a tool!! !

I agree with Stewie. At my job, they keep track of productivity by having us enter our work into a shared spreadsheet. If anyone were to question my productivity I could point to the spreadsheet.

Personally, I'd be worried that somebody might mess with my numbers in a "shared spreadsheet" ... but then, I might be just a bit paranoid.

Ironically for an aspie or HFA, I am more often than others viewed as being off task when talking to fellow employees.

Other employees, including my main boss are unnoticed when they gather and gossip. If it's me and another person, I am asked to do something inane that really is nonessential.

It's as if they are aware of my non-NT status (never revealed to anyone) and think that I should have no need to converse. That said, I am in a position of minor leadership and I am recognized by most fellow peers and the owners as being a reliable hard worker.

As brief and concise as possible:

1 - Most NTs old school bosses think that plowing ahead and "just getting busy" are the preferred methods. I prefer to work smarter, not harder. I try to find more efficient methods for results. I also believe in prevention and response, over reaction.

2 - Some bosses have described me as "lacking urgency". Because of preferring method and cool, I am sometimes seen this way.

3 - NTs and folks like us define productivity differently. We think in results: getting the job done. Making the kill. Their def. of productivity is "appearing productive". They observe with first impressions and emotion: If you look busy and you are making social exchanges with them, they view you as productive.

4 - I am nice, but not overly congenial or warm. If something happens to someone, I am not the most comforting person. I am supportive, but I'm not good at "mothering" or nursing wounds when ill things happen. I am more soldier and diplomat than anything else.

5 - I find that the 90s were a great time for Aspies or HFAs. Results mattered most; EQ less.

6 - EQ matters more now. If you are connecting socially with a boss, they will perceive you as being more invested in your job. I can still do twice as much, but not be recognized by most NTs.

7- I often suggest ideas to my bosses, that IMO would boost productivity and efficiency. Ways to keep our staff fresher, keep things in order. Bosses often reject the ideas wholesale. I've learned that NT Bosses don't like taking suggestions. It's better to make an anonymous tip, or suggest something to someone you know will listen (powerful Ally) and parse the suggestion through them.

People like us may do better in jobs where results matter more: Do A, B and C objectives - finished.
Or maintain and watch A, B, and C -certain tech jobs, librarians, police, courier.
Work from home/online
Or we could become our own bosses, which is something I am very fond of and considering.

Seems no matter how hard I work, I'm always accused of not doing enough - despite doing more than others.
NT's seem to know when and how to work, so they look busy despite slacking off.

You can't win - I am accused of working too hard, which makes the NTs look like slackers. The problem is, they actually ARE slackers, so I kind of see their point.
