I actually tried getting employed by wal-mart and even got an interview. But after the interview I have not gotten a call back from them. But since I have read these horror stories, I'm not trying again.

Funny how the theater I used to work at's popcorn started at 6.75 when I started working there, low and behold, it's 8.00 now for popcorn.

We see their prices going up, but do we see the employee wages going up? Noooooooo.

I like where I work. FedEx treats their employees well.

Just out of curiosity, what is working in todays US like?
I know you only get half a reasonable wage, less employee rights than other nations, and if you lose your job too early and cannot find another one fast enough - you're screwed.
Is that right?

Large corporations, typically supermarkets, only hire young kids as casual workers - who they only have to pay half of what a 21 year old will get. They only hire the teenagers on casual employment, and simply stop giving them work when they get older, or younger teens, therefore cheaper teens, apply for a job.

I worked at Big W in the town I live in from ages 20 to 22. I would get work often because my manager saw I was good at what I did. I worked in nightfill but was often brought in on afternoons to sort out the afternoon stock load on the back dock. Though I must say for <AUD$20 p/h it wasn't really worth the backache and when I got a better offer at the uni doing what I'd been studying the past 5 years I jumped at it.

My yearly gross income is a little over 60K$ US, with medical, dental, legal, optical, and some mental-health services thrown in. My retirement is solely my responsibility. As far as rights go ... I have this Internet connection as long as I don't abuse it (including email), I'm paid hourly plus overtime, even though I set my own hours as needed. And for the last five years, I've written my own evaluations for my supervisors to virtually rubber-stamp their approval. :king:

But if I lost it all and had to start over, I'd likely be flipping burgers or selling insurance. :eew:
