When people insist on giving me detailed descriptions of the problems in their lives I use this skill that I have of sort of splitting my mind into two tracks - on one track I am processing what they are saying - and paying attention and listening for important phrases such as 'and then I got a gun . . .' or something equally shocking that would make me say 'Wait - what?!' and put my whole mind on what they are saying - but as long as one of those phrases doesn't come along I have this other track that is trying to figure out how many new pansies I need to buy for my garden to get the coverage I want or what I am going to cook for dinner, etc . . .

I feel the same way you do - if it helps them for me to listen, great . . .

I love my job. I'm a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom. Wouldn't trade it for the world. :D

My work sucks most of the time. I waitress at a lower class resturant, people make a pig sty and have brats of children that need to be disciplined.

I can cope with it, but i'm not going to be doing it for the rest of my life.

The people that dine there confirm the fact that people are stupid.

I got a job recently, and I don't enjoy it not because it's hard work, or because it pays minimum wage. Not because my boss is strongly religious (though otherwise very nice), and not because working at a walk-in coffee shop is unsanitary to the extreme. And not even because there are bewildering customers. For the most part my interaction with them is handily scripted, or limited to phrases like, "Here you go, enjoy."

It's because I'm not getting anywhere. I'm the problem, not my job. I could work there for years and years, and still only have a small savings. I wouldn't be helping my community, or moving to a place that doesn't almost kill me every summer with the abominable weather. I'm not making a difference politically, environmentally, or socially. I don't have any lasting impact on people--coffee is guzzled faster than you can make it. And I'm much too smart to be working at a coffee shop; if I wasn't such a miserable failure I could be using my intelligence to do great things. Even if I wasn't doing great things, if I didn't find it so much a struggle to do self-beneficial things, I would be able to at least live a good life for myself.

But I'm not, and I don't know how to escape from this nightmare I've trapped myself in. So I hate my wonderful job.

What is it that you'd like in life synx? Is it money? My boss is "loaded" with money and he's the most unhappy person I know, so money doesn't really make you any happier.
Would you like to be married? That can be a very lonely existance, too. I know this from talking to many folks that thought this would be "an answer" to their dreams.
Maybe success is what you're looking for? How many people successful in business, the field of music or Hollywood have you heard of that has tried to commit suicide (some have even succeeded at that).
This is what I think. I think simplicity is the key to happiness. My job is the lowest paying job in the company. I struggle daily trying to make ends meet. My job is horribly boring, and yet, it just doesn't matter. My job doesn't define who I am. I don't compare my life with other lives anymore because my definition of success is different from theirs. I live simply with my pets and I have collections and hobbies that I enjoy and that's enough. It doesn't matter what others have. Sure, I'd like to be able to pay my bills on time and spend money on lavish, exotic items sometimes, but evidently not badly enough to where I want to work 24/7 to do it. I have peace of mind in knowing I am kind and honest and I refuse to believe that my life has no purpose. The next time you feel like you are without purpose, go visit a nursing home or buy a meal for a homeless person or maybe donate your time to help serve a Thanksgiving meal this year. It can really help you change your perception of life. By the way, your posting had an impact on me. I care.

I have had my job for 5 years and almost 4 months. I have worked for this company for almost 6 years. Prior to this one, I had not worked anywhere for longer than 19 months (never been fired...just quit jobs because I hated them and needed a change).

I don't like my job, nor do I particularly dislike it. My boss completely trusts me, so I get to do my thing with very little interruption. I've become so comfortable with this job that I am not sure what I will do when/if a change comes along. I work in operations/engineering for a 'leading national ISP.'

I'm a bagger at a grocery store. I have to pretend to like every person that comes through the line. It gets really annoying having to treat everyone politely (especially people on cell phones....ug). All the annoying requests....PAPER DOESN'T BELONG IN PLASTIC!! !
And then there's the idiot parents that leave there kids IN the kart while I'm bagging and trying to put the bags IN the kart......grrrr......

I'm starting to really hate my job. I get this feeling that's so awful inside of me. It won't go away.

It depends, some days I get to work on Unix/Linux machines which I like.
But now I also have to do some Visual Basic stuff, which I hate, and to make it worse, it requires large amounts of human interaction (so stressing).

That said, I basicly have difficulties working in itself. I hate the being locked up all day. If I had the money, I would quite working instantly and focuss on some Free Software projects.

i hate my job desperately. i hate anything that takes me out of my home. i hate having to think other people's thoughts. i hate having to be in this open office where i can hear every idiot thing everyone around me has to say. why the hell can't mommies talk about anything but their kids poopy diapers? why can't they just toilet train the little hoodlums and shut up? a cattle prod will work if the cheerios don't. why do people think i would give a rat's behind about anyone's new hairdo? we're all 40 &+ and 80% of us are women - shave your f***ing head for all i f***ing care. why must people chatter like primates, having the same pointless conversations over and over and over? why do they think that because i glaze my expression with a smiley mask that i'm interested in every stupid detail of their stupid nothing-to-do-with-me lives? i can't imagine how nature could say stay away any better than i do.

um, sorry.

the work's good, i like the work OK. but the socialization's killing me.

I love my job until they change my day to day duties or send me to work in another part of the country and then I get uber depressed.

It depends for me. I hate doing oil changes/maintaince on the larger CNC machines where I work, but sometimes the "other" work is quite fun for me. Such as building racking for skids/pallets of pipe fittings, boxes, etc.

hmmm. what I really wanted to say was this:

Swagelok (a company that makes pipe fittings) has been both depressing and fun. I worked at it last year and this year I am in the maintaince department. Some days I have to work with a crew that maintains the machines by changing the oil and completely scrubbing the interiors and exteriors of said machines. This is terrible work b/c I have to stand on my feet the entire day, get covered in oil and the cleaning involves very powerful degreasants/chemicals. A OK day is when I get to make small boxes or inspect parts, b/c at least I get to sit down for those. But it is still terrifically dull work. A good day is when maintaince sends me out to construct something like tables or help the engineers prep an area for installation of machinery/equipment. I guess I could say that generally I am dissatisfied with my job and I feel I could do better, but it is the only thing open right now, and it pays
