I love to drive. My now-husband helped me get my license when I was 19, in college, and we've been through a series of cars as well. I've only ever gotten one speeding ticket and had one accident (flipped my convertible, only had it 2 weeks, damn I loved that car). I have a Geo Tracker now, it has a ragtop and I love folding it back on gorgeous sunny days and just cruising. I don't drive so well at night though; I have big issues with oncoming headlights. If I'm behind a car I can just concentrate on their taillights and I'm fine, but with no one in front of me it is really difficult to focus on the road.

I drive a manual transmission car. I got my license at 18 after years of practice. I didn't drive daily though (lived in City) and I halfway forgot how after a few years. My husband took me to one of those sprawling office parks on weekends and had me drive around and around for hours, up ramps, down ramps, park, go. Must have stalled the car 1,000 times.

I've never hit anyone, I don't speed, and I have improved over the years. It's still hard for me and it takes a lot of work. I have rules to help me focus, like I always listen to talk radio (mostly public radio). I have a little system and order to turn on my driving function.

The funny thing is, I'm just as bad walking, running, and on a bicycle. I've had a lot of bicycle accidents over the years.

I've driven since I was 17. (I am now 33.) I had tons of accidents because of my ADHD, totaled numerous cars, even had my license suspended at one point. I take Strattera now and am much better :P although I have gotten two speeding tickets while driving through the mountains, I forgot about all the speed traps up there. Every time I got in an accident I'd have a meltdown and end up being arrested.

I have no trouble with the gears when driving but I don't understand mirrors. I can look in one and see a car but not know where it's coming from, is this because of my asperger's?
I also struggle to judge distances, is this related to AS or am I just stupid?

I think it might be AS, I have the same problems. I do drive, in fact, I delivered rural mail for nine years! I do not find driving easy however. Poor sense of direction too. My daughter knows a certain tone of voice when I am driving and will be immediately quiet and turn off the radio. I have not driven a manual car since 2000, and I would like to relearn. (My former job required us to use automatics only) I also had to learn to drive, twice. I learned at 16, got married at 18 and wasn't permitted to drive again until I was single again at 20.
I have Aspie friends who drive too...all VW New Beetles.

I've had my license for three years, but I try to avoid driving when I can. It's not sensory overload, per se, but it does distract me from thinking or working. Living in a city, I often take public transportation.

I drive but man gas is expensive so I take buses. Parking downtown is expensive anyway so I take the bus downtown to work.
I was nervous for a while when I drive because I was in a little car wreck but I think I got over it, but now I am more observant and more cautious.

I got my driver's license in 1955. I had driven with Dad for several years before that.

When in Europe in 1959-1961 I got my racing license.

I have had several jobs which required driving long distances.

I went about 12 years without a car, because I owned only motorcycles.

I just retired from driving school bus.

I found that my hyperfocus helped me in racing and long distance driving. I found that my hyperfocus was a detriment to my school bus driving. When I could no longer control when the hyperfocus took over, I had to retire from a job I love.

Some Aspies can drive. Some NTs cannot drive. It depends on the individual's skills and will.

I refuse to drive because I utterly failed the vision test with my contact lenses and only barely passed with my eyeglasses. Considering how the quality of my vision varies from day to day, I'm just not comfortable driving.

Furthermore, it will be at least a decade before refractive laser eye surgery becomes sophisticated enough to improve my prescription.

I drive and wouldn't be without my licence now. I do find driving quite tiresome over long distances or in very heavy traffic, but I have found that down to the vehicle that I'm using more than myself, since I have driven my father's Mercedes-Benz in the same conditions and found it easy.

I've driven for a living on and off for a few years, I'm actually pretty good at it. If I do zone out, my hands tend to go on autopilot and take me somewhere familiar, so I do make the occasional wrong turn. I like the non-supervised nature of the work, most of my time is spent in my car, so my contact with store management and the customer is minimized. I got my license at 17, but once I got over the initial anxiety, I took to driving pretty quickly. I've actually found that since I've started driving, I tent to be able to learn other vehicles (5 speeds, boats) with minimal effort, maybe it's a muscle memory thing.
