I agree with an awful lot of what Girl7000 said on page 1.

It can be surprising which jobs work, and which don't. For instance one that I thought would be ok,( especially as was the result of receiving special help from the Govt. employment agencies for the first time ever to find something that fitted my requirements, which at time were supposedly the result of " anxiety and depression") was info officer in a tiny office for a national mental illness organisation, answering phone, answering post, and keeping the a/cs. It was part time , and I was the only employee apart from the regional director who came in for about an hour a day to collect post, process funding apps and print leaflets etc. This should have been ideal; but I dreaded the arrival of the director. It ruined each day for me , that he was going to pop in at some point. And we shared the same desk for phone and post work. HOPELESS!

Whereas working Sunday mornings and weekday evenings in an isolated petrol-station was not bad at all! Kept that up for quite a while, whereas the info job I left after 3 months, and I struggled for most of those 3 months!!

Organic farms ; no, cos once out there in all that bucolic peace I just wanted to sit in a trance looking at leaves and stuff. I guess that actually it fell below my required stim level!??

I lasted longest time ever in a big library , answering enquiries etc. And doodling when not called upon.

Mothering ( as way of working at home to earn my living ) was AWFUL, until son reached point where all he wants to do is read, play on computer, watch films and draw, like me really!. We ASD together-separately now!! It's become bearable . But while he was baby was HELL, undiluted. I think it was so stressful that it made my ASD much much worse. (Also living in foreign country where can't even get by with my old articulacy and eloquence and right accent . Here I SOUND like I have an ASD!! !! Which has not helped.)

Other jobs ;

Waitress:nightmare.
Tax officer: not bad but was supposed to gradually take on managerial responsibilities! Aaarrgghh!

Kitchen assistant where virtually all I had to do was keep up with the washing-up and had a work-corner all to myself: that was good, but unfortunately the manageress was so impressed by my efficiency she took to coming in later and later and asking me to do more and more of the opening up and preparation of dishes and even serving first customers.

Really understand old saying about people getting promoted to level of max incompetence. When I was good at something people wanted to move me to something else!! !!

I'd have liked night security but I'm a woman and they aren't interested.

Clearing huge backlogs of paperwork which no one looks at anylonger but needs putting in order and filing: that was good too. I actually went in early and stayed late I enjoyed it so much!! ! Nobody bothered me, just complimented me when they discovered that they were able to find things that they couldn't previously!! !!

I always thought that welder would be a good job for someone with AS. You work unsupervised, doing detailed work with metal, and you make big money. What's not to love?

I'm a graphic designer, and it seems like a good fit for me. I do brochure design, web design and development, 3d animation and stuff. I love the work... but sometimes not where I do it. Right now I'm in a cubicle farm, and it's way to loud, social and annoying for my taste. But when left alone and with the headphones on with some relaxing music, it's a great job. Lots of fun creative work and lots of logical programming work. It's a good mix for me. I'm not sure if it's a typical AS job though.

I work in a horse barn. I'm outside (a cubicle is my idea of hell), and most of the time nobody even gives me any instructions. I know my job, and I do it.
Sometimes my coworkers do piss me off (yep, all 2 of them), but overall I like it there. My boss pays pretty good too, which doesn't hurt.

Attorney.

If you are good with words, you will be good at drafting documents and speaking in court.

If you work for yourself, which I believe is the only way to go for people with AS and/or ADHD, you can get to the office when you want, make your own shedule, avoid phone calls if you want, etc.

Have to be good at talking to people. And that's another thing that I love about my job. I love to talk to people, but I am not good at making friends, nor am I any good at getting along with people say at soccer games. But as a lawyer, I get to talk to people about my obsession all day long, and they pay me to do it, lol.

I've often thought I would be a good legal researcher. Are you primarily into research, trial appearances, contracts?

Funny, I just realized. If you want to just do research and writing, you don't have to worry about talking to people. I was just remembering how I used to do project work for different attorneys. Some of them I never met. I only spoke to them over the phone, and we faxed things or emailed documents.

Anyway, I work for myself so I do all my own research and writing, plus I go to court. In fact, I go to court a lot.

I don't care too much for being stuck in the office writing documents because I hate sitting at a desk. But if I'm in court too much, then I start to miss my office. Probably because, even though I like to go to court, it can be very stressful.

Geez, it just hit me. AS people would probably be really good at legal research, lol. I'm good at research. I'll keep looking until I find the most perfect thing I'm looking for. I'm anal, I think.

I find dentistry my ideal job. At present in a Special Needs role.

It uses my brains, I don't have to talk too much( have a nurse to do all the nice chitchat stuff with patients), it's technical, my lack of empathy means it actualy makes it easier for me to perform the surgery stuff, my patience allows me to treat special needs patient especially with my knowledge of myself and I get time between patients to go on line!

Locomotive Engineer? Almost no interaction required in it apart from the odd call to Train Control and other train crew (if any).

Computer programming. COBOL. It's light on math, heavy on process and has enough structure planning to be interesting. When I get tired it's the last cognitive process to shut down.

Geologist. :D
