Well what I was indicating is I very well could meltdown......or my PTSD might get set off which would not be OK around something dangerous like a lawn mower. Also what would be the point of spending a large chunck of my time at a job I hate? especially when there are other jobs I can do that i like more? At least with painting houses sometimes you get one with an awesome view of the mountains or whatever...or its just a nice house so its cool being in it.

You don't need to work a job you hate if you have a job you like. But a job you hate is better than no job or potentially SSI.

I think SSI would be better than a job I hate....I mean I already spent plenty of my life at school as a child, I didn't like it there because people were jerks so I've had enough of being stuck somewhere I hate.

It may be better for you, but I doubt it. Doing a job even if you hate it allows you to grow and occupies your mind. It's better for everyone else because there is 1 less person on SSI.

Yeah I am sure being in a sh***y environment really allows for a lot of growth....that proves untrue in my case. I don't want my mind occupied by work I don't like and fellow employees that treat me like crap I am already mentally ill I don't need to add to it that way. Also if you're here to preach about how wrong it is to use the social safety network this is not the thread for you...I didn't post this so some jerk could try and make me feel bad about considering applying for it. I guess I should just live my life for whats best for everyone else and disregard my own needs .

I mean I think if it comes down to mowing lawns or getting SSI I'll go for the SSI...better for me and others because its better if I don't go over the edge and possibly cause harm to anyone  .

A sh***y job that you hate is still better than no job. It reminds me that everything could be much worse. It provides a baseline.
Also, look at the underlined portion. Millions of people in the USA do that every day, whether crappy job or not (I really love paying higher taxes than others in my tax bracket and receiving less in services because I'm not living the lifestyle the gov't say I should be living (the gov't does a fair amount of social engineering via the tax code and the way it spends those dollars).

Well quite frankly I disagree...the idea that one should just shut up and endure a sh***y environment doesn't work for me. I mean what then is even the point of life? Also as far as taxes go if you feel you're being taxed to high take it up with the government, if you feel its wrong to be taxed take it up with the government. Don't try to guilt trip people who get help from welfare programs as if they are the cause of misuse of tax money. If anything welfare is the best use of tax money because it helps citizens who are struggling.......its some of the other spending that pisses me off and I certainly do not think people should be taxed at too high of a percent.

It's not that taxes are too high, it's that the differences between the people who make the same, but taxed at different rates due to lifestyle choices (deductions and credits).

So yeah I was just wondering what other ways are there to make at least a little income because I am not so sure I can find a job right now and even if I start the SSI disability process it would be months before I even find out if I get denied again or approved. So if anyone's got any ideas I'd be happy to hear them.

Well, since I don't have a CPA or any skill like that and I do NOT want to do accounting. . .I am a tutor. Why not? I have an MBA. I can tutor business classes. I do NOT do any of the algebra that kids/teens need. I don't understand it myself and when I was getting my undergrad in business I HAD TO take all three algebra classes and I HAD TO have a tutor 5 nights a week just to pass each class. God I hated Algebra. But statistics I loved! Go figure!

So if you know how to read to kids and you NEED some kind of income tutor children and help them learn how to read. Lord know that some parents can't speak English and the kids that live here need to learn English. Other than that???? What do you like to do? Do you have a skill? Do you have your own office? If you do, you can may be start a resume writing service. I'd do that, but I don't have my own personal office where people could come in, sit and look at there resume before it is all printed up. My printer also just went out of me after 3 faithful years.

If you know accounting,, do that. Or if you own your own lawn mover, do that on the side. Or may be you can clean someone's house for $40 each house. Do as many houses as you need so you can get the income you need. Do you need $500 a month?

Think about your target market as well. It all depends on your service or product and your target market. If you are planning on cleaning homes in a poorer area, you can't expect them to pay you $40 to clean their house! Can you drive to a nicer area of town? If yes, then may be you can charge more. But you need to balance that with the cost of gasoline and you also need to know your boundaries. How much is too far to drive? You want to break even and if you can - get a profit. (But many businesses that start out do not make a profit in their first year, this is why so many businesses FAIL within the first 6 months of operations!)

Find your passion. The money will follow. Even if your passion is painting and writing books. Trust me. The money will follow you. Good luck

I'd much rather get ssi than a job I hate. A job I hate wouldn't last anyways. I'd either get fired or quit.

Right now I'm supported by my mother and when she is gone if she can't leave me anything and I can't get ssi I'll be screwed because I can't work. I'll end up homeless and may as well off myself then.

Well, that's what people do, to have food and shelter and all that. I don't think there are that many people that really enjoy work. Most people hate it.

And this means I should not apply for SSI if I need to? I mean like I said those are all issues one should take up with the government not disabled and/or poor people who use the welfare programs. I mean if people are getting taxed too high, or unfairly I certainly do not agree with that but is not the fault of people who need financial help that would be the government.

But I don't want to derail too much...besides I want to try other things first.

Yeah I can see doing it out of necessity...I just don't see what good it would do me to go pursuing jobs I hate when I could try out ones I don't hate. As I said I don't hate painting work, my dad may be able to hook me up with a job in that. To me there is no point to life if one is spending the majority of their time somewhere they hate and recovering from being somewhere they hate.

I mean that is what I did for 12 years and then another year in college......and what I have to look forward to is more of the same old misery, sounds well pretty pointless.

Anyways if I work I do not 'have' to work somewhere I hate......if it ended up that way I do have every right to leave. To be clear though I am not talking about superficial hate like 'oh I would rather go to a great movie than this.' when I say I hate an environment that typically means its a severely distressing environment for me and I cannot handle it without going mental. Its not about just preferring to be somewhere else I mean I know work isn't all fun and games I mean that is why you get paid because it motivates one to continue doing work rather then go do something else which I am fine with. Its more if the environment causes me distress I can't handle it especially to function well enough to do the work and therefore I would hate working somewhere with that sort of environment because I wouldn't be able to handle it.

-Well I know how to open a book and read it, but I doubt I'd be a good tutor especially for kids...I mean usually I don't even know what to say to kids even sometimes the ones related to me. Also I suck at being that person they are supposed to listen to and/or respect which is kind of embarrasing.......because even with like babysitting it wouldn't work kids would end up running around wild and I'd have no idea what to do.

-I don't have any real skills really, I don't have an office just a bedroom at my moms house and I'm 22. I would not be opposed to possible writing type work......but then I hear it pays next to nothing especially if you cannot come up with something that sells and since i don't do much writing and when I do its just been mostly research papers in school don't know i could really depend on something like that for any form of income.

-I fail at math so I don't think accounting would be good, unless it doesn't deal with numbers and money and math like I thought it did. I'd clean before I mow lawns. But then it depends on how many people want some random non-professional to come clean their house...if no ones interested then it wouldn't work. And I don't have a car and still have a permit rather than a drivers liscense so I personally could not drive anywhere I have to either take the bus or get rides from other people to get places. Also I don't know I'd be nervous about cleaning a wealthier persons house........what if i messed something up and they wanted to sue the sh*t out of me or something?

Also honestly I don't really feel very passionate about anything, But yeah cleaning isn't a bad idea, I guess I am just anxious about screwing up and ruining something out of clumsiness or something but that's probably just anxiety because I am not bad at cleaning really.

I've spent long periods unemployed for reasons besides laziness. I'm just pointing out that very few people actually enjoy work, but food and shelter are difficult, or require compromises such as living with someone you don't like, when you don't have a paycheque. A paycheque is independance and security, at the cost of time and sanity.

I guess I just like seeing the sun come up and go down, then. I figure my ancestors did not much enjoy shovelling coal or being serfs or doing all the other horrible jobs (much worse than any modern ones) that they did, but they managed to find reasons to live in a more grim existance than my own. To do so myself would be nothing new.

I think you are being a bit harsh noname_ever, this is an autistic site.

There is an enormous difference between "doing a job you don't like" for an NT and doing a job that cause an incredible amount of stress for an autistic person sending them into a suicidal depression.

Surely wrongplanet is somewhere that people should be making the distinction between these two thing instead of saying 'suck it up'?

For example I don't care what the salary is or what the alternative is, I am never going to do a job that requires me to come into contact with cotton wool, ever.

Does this make sense to an NT? Not in the slightest, but on wrongplanet there should be a fair amount of understanding about the stance and not just a bunch of right wing rhetoric.

Thing is serfs did not receive income that even came close to compensating their effort, so if modern jobs are comparable to that it really has me wondering why since that would suggest it's likely one can work their ass off and still be unable to afford food and shelter. I suppose seeing the sun come up and go down isn't worth the pain really...but then I don't know what I really even want in life anyways. And I admit I don't like that a pay check(nothing fancy to me), 'is' independance and security, that just feeds the whole cycle of people juging ones character on how much wealth they have, treated better with more treated worse with less so on and so fourth. Not that it has any chance of happening at least in my lifetime but an alternative to the monetary system would be a good change.

Modern day corporate/capitalistic society is built on the worst traits of humanity, in my opinion.

There is an enormous difference between "doing a job you don't like" for an NT and doing a job that cause an incredible amount of stress for an autistic person sending them into a suicidal depression.

And that was precisely what i was talking about, if I meant dislike I would have said dislike......hate I thought did a better job expressing how I feel about jobs that would cause me more stress than I could handle and bring out my symptoms.

I always wonder what it is one is supposed to suck up when people say that.......I mean isn't it best not to suck up unhealthy things like bad environments. I guess they mean it more like 'you should just get over it.' which is pretty obnoxious. Chances are if one could 'get over it.' they probably would unless there was some sort of huge benefit not to. But I personally do not find it fun or beneficial being distressed by crap I can't get over.
