Your position changing after being hired?

Has it ever happened to you that you were hired for a certain combination of skills and experiences you have, but soon after starting to work those were not relevant to your tasks anymore and then you were rendered kind of having nothing to give to the job?

I don't know why, but this has happened to me many times, and it's one major reason for the multiple times I've been fired.

I don't know about the laws and customs of the country your in, but it is a good idea to read the job contract your signing and have a clear job description. You can then compare the things your asked to do with your job description. An employer can also ask you to do 'additional related tasks' in your contract, which is open to interpretation!

In the UK a employer is legal required to provide a job description!

It's actually more vague than that. Eg. I'll be hired mainly because my mother tongue is X, only to be told when on the job that I'm not allowed to communicate with the customers in their (and my) language (X) - which renders 70% of my uniqueness and reason for being hired, null.

Yes, and no. There have been many times I've hired into a position that then finds the needs of the organization changing and so I end up doing something other than that which I was hired for. You either roll with it, quit, or are fired. I have been working since 1972 and I've never had an employment contract - those are for the very upscale types here in the USA, not for the rank-and-file types like me.

It's very nerve-wracking, but you do what you have to do to keep the job.

It is the nature of employment for you job to change over time.

As an employee, you should have the right to have what duties are expected of you listed in written form. Likewise, if an employer is going to change your job duties, you should ask why it is happening.

In many cases, your job changes because your old tasks are being phased out. So, you either change or be dismissed because they no longer need you.
