I clean parking lots, picking up litter for a living, and I'm very proud of the job that I have. I'm not afraid to tell people what I do, either. I get confused looks from the more pristine people of society. They have this idea that, at least there are people who want to do that sort of thing. I tell them, "But, I'm happy with the job that I have. I can come into work with spiked, coloured hair and blue jeans, and nobody will say anything. I also don't have people nagging me with their small talk, every five seconds!" 8)

If you do something nobody understands, you can't relate, either, in my experience. Surely cleaning parking lots cannot be beyond the understanding of most people. If you are able to live on your own and pay your bills, living within your means, then you are doing better than many people, and what they think doesn't matter.

I have been hounded by family members to get into something that has better benefits, as though the benefits are the only thing that matters. "I want benefits" sounds like an ineffective job hunting approach, I would need something better anyway. Right now I am able to make ends meet and stay true to my causes, and those who really know me will understand this.

Being able to keep your appearance as you like is also a plus. Your description reminds me of this.

I wish more people would go for jobs they felt fulfilled their lives instead of high paying jobs.

I have had some high paying jobs that i HAD to take to NOT be unemployed even if they bored me out of my head, and they all ended the same = *kabooom*.

Recently my counsellor at the employment office realised (after a bit of persuasion and the contact with a psychologist/aspergers thing) that it would be better if i got a job that i fit into and the last few months i have looked for jobs that i could fit in to and actually hang on to - and not be unemployed again in 6 months, continuing to cost society money instead of being a productive citizen...

Result: Things are looking much better, and if it all go well, i may start working in 2-3 weeks :)

Gah! I hate litterbugs. You have a very noble job. You're not on the public dole either. You probably never litter either!

Hard to think of a better definition of an exemplary member of society.

Even litterers are good for the economy because without them, there be no jobs for people to clean up the trash

I clean offices. It was intended to be a transitional job when I got out of rehab but I've been doing it for almost 10 years. I have a good reputation for reliability with my employers so now I can adapt my schedule to my needs as a single parent. I have even been known to go home and take a nap- they don't care as long as the client is happy-and they are. The job requires no concentration so I just listen to my MP3 or chat with the people-It's even become sort of a traveling book club. I don't have to be anything but myself and I can dress for comfort. I'm with you CockneyRebel- "success" is relative.
