I was in a water pump (tank water, farm irrigation etc) business yesterday and the subject of asperger's came up and the guy is very keen to employ an aspie with mechanical/inventor skills. I don't have those so I could only refer him to the local disability employment agency. I don't know any other aspies around here (Tasmania nth coast) but I know my former lawnmowing guy got himself an aspie thru that local disability employment agency, so presumably there's others.

He's heard of the cliches about geniuses and people who can fix and invent machines and I think he's seen a few tv portrayals of aspies at work (they mentioned "Boston Legal", which I haven't seen).

anyway, just posting this to let people know that some employers are starting to get the message that we are uniquely useful in many ways in the workforce.

Employment assurance topic

What a great bit of news, postperson. :D Too bad in Canada no one wants to do that. They all want social types, preferring them to actual workers. :?

yeah, generally i think employment can be easier for people with the science/tech/engineering skills range. my background is arts and that's ferociously social.

Tasmania eh?

I am an Aspie rotting away in Adelaide, and often think about Tassie. I love to build things and do so regularly. I also weld, mill, computer design, machine, synthesize, invent. Last project has been a mobile mine recovery unit for recovering gold from old shafts. Its hard work, dangerous and fun.

I also have a PhD in electrochemistry if the guy needs a battery design that will last for infinite charges (ok, maybe just millions), or a window you can turn on and off or perhaps some synthetic muscles.

Chemistry, electricity, materials and machines is my thing, whip them all together and make ideas and technology like the world has never seen.

And I like Tassie...

What exactly does this guy need?

That's a cool story. I work in high tech and I could definitely see recuiting from the AS ranks. Most of the guys I work with probably are aspies, anyway.

Maybe you can help him interview them?

Find the man and shake him by the hand, then buy him a cold one.

I wish there were more employers like this.

There are.

My ex-wife has a business and needs an other person on board to spread the workload so she can get it done and get more work. She created a job for me (she wants to use my expertise), but we had to apply for wage-support from the Job Centre to do it.

She was going to pay me 800€/mth for 5 hours a day, five days a week. She needed 600€/mth from the Job Centre to do that, since she'd have to be paying me 200€/mth over the 600€/mth needed from the Job Centre, as well as about 250€/mth in taxes and insurances. So we applied for the 600€/mth and made a good case.

Job Centre came back with an offer of 380€/mth which - having seen the business accounts - they must have known was not enough.

So - thanks to the Job Centre (Finnish-style) - I'm not working.
