Well this coming Thursday will be my last day. At this rate, I should give up any hope of having a career or financial security.

Were you laid-off or fired? I guess since you're going back they didn't just terminate you on the spot but the let you know before hand that you were not wanted there(as if it is any consolation.)

I got fired 2 weeks ago and I'm still allowed to enter the company quarters, I'm finishing a Photography course subsidized by the company. I was surprised at first, but then I guess they trust me...

and maybe they don't hate you either? Maybe they hadn't a clue what to do with the smart but odd lady they just didn't know how to work with? I certainly hope you might have a softer view of your former employer, if for no other reason than just your peace of mind, my sister.

Each time I'm fired they have this look of pity rather than hate.

Today's been a rough day. I feel despair and doom and a total failure.

As someone who was fired five times in his working 'career' I just want to wish you welcome to the club. Don't worry, after the third time you just take things in your stride and move along to the next job that comes along.

It happens to just about everyone, but I'd argue it's worse when one struggles with AS/ASD. Don't give up. You'll be in my thoughts, and keep using this site because it seems to be one of the most active.

Well I took it a number of times and thought maybe it was my fault but on this occasion I have decided to be firm and am taking the company to employment tribunal for disability discrimination and I think anyone else at least who is based in the UK should do the same because the law will hopefully be on your side.

I feel like a total failure. I'm damaged goods. Nobody wants to hire me in this economy. I'm barely holding on to my will to live.

I'm sorry you're feeling down, BitterGeek. Please don't start giving up on yourself- everyone goes through some tough times, but eventually things will get better. You're NOT "damaged goods"- you're a person, not "goods", and you have value whether you are working or not, ok? Jenny

That's what I thought recently, and I've been telling myself this each time I feel like a loser...

If you were laid off, as opposed to fired for poor performance, you might be eligible for unemployment benefits. Google "[your state] unemployment office", and go to their website. In some cases, you might even be eligible if you were fired, but each state has its own criteria. So stop by the unemployment office near you, and see what they can do. I collect unemployment benefits myself, and they've been a lifesaver. Given the recent economy, everyone knows that people are losing jobs left and right. So the offices made their application process very simple; for me, it took about a week from the time I first walked into the office to the time I started collecting money. For a government organization, that's really fast.

BTW in at least one state [CA] you can collect unemployment if you are fired for performance related issues that did not involve gross misconduct. Check your state's laws.

You can always file and see what happens. Some states are biased toward the employee and might force the employer to justify denying unemployment. It is worth a try.
