Might be in luck...
I applied for a position as a feature story writer for my university's newspaper. It's actually a paid position, and you don't have to be a journalism major to apply... anyways, for a CpEN major I'm actually a fairly good writer, plus I had some background as a reporter for my high school newspaer for two nonconsecutive years. Still, I wasn't keen on my chances of getting the job.
But then today I get an email from the editor, who says that in lieu of the standard job interview, she will be assigning us a trial story on the upcoming student senate meeting. The person with the best story gets the job. I was estatic when I heard this, because it means I get out of a face-to-face interview (which I royally suck at); my chance at this is totally dependent on my writing skills, which IMHO are pretty good. Plus, I checked the list of recipients in the email she sent; besides myself, only two others got the message. This means only two other applicants were accepted, which brings my raw probability of getting the job to an even 1 out of 3. Can you say lucky?
The only minor setback is that the meeting we are reporting on is at 7 next Tuesday, which is the same time as one of my Comp Sci. labs. However, I sent an email to my professor explaining the situation. She's a nice person, and most of the time if you dont finish a lab you have to finish it at home anyways, so I don't see a problem with my showing up late and completing what I can within an hour (its a two hour lab, and I usually finish the assigned program in half that time.) We'll see. Still, at least I dont have to worry about my Aspie-ness screwing up this one. WOOT!
