I have hit an epiphany. No matter what job you do, you always have to come up with ways of completing the tasks in a way that is more timely and more efficient. What happens with SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many people with Aspergers is that we tend to get into a groove and we complete our tasks the same way EVERY SINGLE TIME. When what we should be doing is trying to come up with new ways to do it better and faster on a daily basis for the first year.

WIth the NT this is instinctive, but for the Aspie it is not. So what is the solution to this. Get a composition book for $1.99, then everyday when you get home from work sit down and think about each of the tasks you did and try to come up with new ways to do them faster and neater. See what works for you and get rid of what does not.

Any job wants to see a learning curve from you. Any thoughts from people who successfully hold down work in a grocery store?

Actually you could probably also think of ways to do this while you are on the job.

I did notice this actually in my last job. I vacuumed and ran the floor scrubber at the local YMCA. But I did notice I would do things in a particular order the same way all the time. I'd occasionally get in trouble because they'd ask me to do something else and I'd forget about it because I got so into a groove.

You're definitely getting the gist of it. What you said is especially true for us, working in produce departments. Building good produce displays is as much an art as it is a science. In produce adjusting par (adjusting size/location of displays of products to reflect what is available and what is on sale) is a daily task--you will get lots of practice doing this and you will be forced to experiment and innovate often.

One thing that is encouraging, yet also sometimes bothersome, is that everybody in the department will have their own methods. Everyone will stack pears, lemons, apples differently. There are lots of ways that work, just find the way that works for you, and improve on that method as you go along. Or, just as often, I find myself copying someone else's method and then improving on their method as I go along.

Also, taking time to think about and develop good practices is something that your boss will likely appreciate. Most employees don't care enough to go to the trouble, so it will make you look good to put forth that effort.

It's okay to do things the same way every time, as long as it is a way that works well. I definitely have my routines and tend to stick to them, and I do pretty well.
