Working with people with disabilities
Hello there-
I work with people with disabilities and it's a very unique scenario because I have a disability myself and that is aspergers among other challenges I deal with. I am lucky to have a supportive boss, and I work well with my clients. Connecting with their parents takes a bit more effort for me, I don't want them to sense that I have stuff I am dealing with.
So, like my clients I am in supported employment and on medications and such, but I feel I am close to the border between being the consumer and the one that provides the service, I think what helps is that I am able to read myself really well and know when it is time for quiet time when I am getting overwhelmed.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that other aspies do the same work as I, because I know there are challenges when it comes to the social aspects. The real perks though is that much of the time it is just you and your client, and it is often quiet, especially if you have been working together for a period of time.
