I could be wrong, but what about cake decorating as a job for an Aspie. I knew one cake decorator who had his own shop, but two friends decorated from their houses and one who was a qualified chef who chose to specialise in cake decorating and did so from his caravan.

A perfect job that fuses creativity with pedantic practicality, Work your own hours, on your own. You can just lock the door and concentrate on what you are doing. Good variety and new things to learn at your own pace. Lots of books and equipment to collect or little to collect if money is tight.

Always weddings out there.

Indeed, if you have a creative flair, study flowers too and offer a package deal. Or specialise in sugar flowers and supply other cake decorators. All things that can be done from home at your own pace for little outlay.

I think I might talk myself into it.

Not to rain on your parade, because I think this is a great idea but would you be able to deal with overly demanding bridezillas/customers? Honestly, I think cake decorating is a great art and if you can learn the skills, do it. It's a very fruitful business nowadays thanks to the exposure of cake decorating shows like Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss.

If you end up making a fancy cake, could you post a pic of it here? We'd like to see it. :D

I have no idea, but cake decorating sounds really fun.

The hobby itself is something I used to do, which is why I had various friends, mentioned above, who did it. Only problem for me now is location. This is a low population rural area with over-representation of people with this and similar hobbies with a number doing it commercially in nearer larger towns.

I think it can work, but would be best in a higher density, urban environment and worth considering.

Dealing with Bridezilla would be a problem true, however, like getting a tooth extracted, it would be relatively short duration compared to the making of the cake. Still, we all fall on different parts of the spectrum. If you can handle a nasty person for short durations, then go for it.

Or just specialise in sugar paste flowers and decorations and supply decorators. That would be even less customer contact.

Funny thing is, apart from cake decorating, I never showed much of an inclination for crafts, but ideas keep coming to me. Gourmet soaps or icons for the neo-pagan market. So many little niche markets that could be supplied, all created in little lonely spaces, and techniques learned from free library books.

Yeah, see if you can attend culinary school or apprentice under a local baker or something. It'd be really cool. A friend of mine is trying to open a bakery, she went to culinary school and now she's at business school. She is following her dream, why can't you? :)
