I just wanted to let everyone know that I have a job interview next week with the City of Lawton, Oklahoma, for a GIS Technician position there. The interview would be on the phone, so that will save travel costs. I am a bit nervous, but also excited.

My last interview was 6 months ago.

Thanks!

Interestingly enough, I used to live in Wichita Falls, Texas, just across the state line.

Good luck Tim. Did you use this site to find GIS jobs?

Someone that I know used that site as well and he's been working for some local gov't doing GIS. Would you have to move closer to the job, Tim?

On a similar topic, I passed examinations for planning positions in California, Iowa, and Maine. This means that I have been placed on an eligibility list for future positions.

GIS would be a fun job! :)

Not to scare you, but some phone interviews can be hard. I know some good people who have blown them.

These are unfortunately becoming more common. They can't "see" you're a nice guy. (Like we can :) ) All they get is your tone of voice. Not always the fairest way to evaluate people, but it's economical.

Don't drink too much coffee before the interview. One person told me they had their notes in front of them, then their hands were shaking so much they couldn't grab the right pages! The person I'm thinking of also had pages taped up all over, but they still came up with questions out of left field he hadn't considered. Maybe he over-prepared... :?

Research as much as you can about the group (it's a city job, or private company?). One of the first things they sometimes ask is "Do you know what we do here?" As if you're so far away, maybe you don't really know what you applied for.

Try to 'sound' upbeat and positive. Practice your answers to those standard interview questions (your biggest negative, your greatest accomplishment, yada yada yada) so they come out smoothly. The more you practice saying them out loud, the more you can refine them. Especially since you haven't interviewed in 6 months.

They might ask if you are familiar with the area. No one wants to move someone in from out of state only to have them leave. Be very positive in your comments about OK. :D

Best of Luck!

The interview went very well, and I should hear something later this week.

Just in case, I am still applying to other jobs as well.

Looks like Friday is the day of reckoning.

In other job news, two of the jobs I applied to were cancelled and will not be filled.

Incidentally, many of the jobs I applied to were in that area.
