I've recently grauated with a Meng in Civil engineering. I was goign to join g aovnernment agency however after sending out the contract they turned round and said they couldn't afford to hire me. :(

Now i've been looking our for a job and applying all over the place but not getting particularly far. Each time I get a rejection it makes me feel like an utter failiure. Now is it me the companies don't like aor is it something else. If i got as far as interview I'm sure I can ask the companies if i fail at that point. I'm really down in the dumps over this. Any help/ suggestions would be relly appreciated.

I think it may be to do with many applicants to each job, they try to shortlist. I've heard some shortlist randomly.

Keep trying, I don't think it's you, I think there are a lot of people going for the same job. Possibly it may be a good idea to do a C.V. course to figure out how to distinguish your C.V./application from other peoples.

Also, if you can, do some volantary work to keep busy so that you have something to say about what you're doing/have done. Doing stuff will help you feel better and give you something to talk about (explaining employment gaps) when you finally get to interview.

Worst economy since the Great Depression. Nobody's hiring, and the ones who are can get someone with experience.

Pick the places you want most to work. Offer to do internships there while you are looking. Do a great job. Give them a reason to tell the people who are hiring that you are special.

You aren't getting interviews for the same reason Democrats just lost the House. The economy. There is no reason to take it personally, hard as it is. I'm really sorry you're having such a hard time.

See if you can volunteer in any way that is close to what you want to do. If there is such a place, try doing Temporary work. Many people get hired after doing temp jobs. Even if it's not exactly what you do, if it's in a place that could hire your for your engineering skills that may help. Try to tap into anyone who can help you. I have found most of my jobs through the people that I know.

Hang in there. Jobs are really hard to come by anyway, now it's even harder. Believe me, it's not you. People I know have been looking for months and can't even get an interview because they are competing with literally hundreds of people.

Thanks for your support guys. I've had some positive replys recently. I've been shortlisted for two jobs so there is hope yet. I'm also going to volunteer at my local country park doing conservation stuff. It's only one or two days a week but should keep me out of the house.

This economic climate is rubbish. Especcially with this ConDem government who are stripping the country of any social support. I an't even claim benifits because i went to uni. Ahwell I suppose the public did vote for them.
