Getting references

I've just stalled in a job application because they demand 2 professional references and I don't know who to ask. I have worked at the same job since 2006, and it was my first non-self-employed work.

What types of people besides employers are suitable to use for references?

My former TAFE teachers worked well for me on my own resume a few years ago.
If you go to university, your favourite professor would be good. If you have any extracurricular activities outside of study, asking people who are "in charge" of those to be a reference would be good too (coaches, music teachers, tutors etc).

you can ask for references from people who you work alongside and even who work underneath you as well as from people who are above you, as well. Often they will have different perspectives which can be valuable.
