And what bogus excuse did they invent to get rid of you?

I couldn't get hired at Walmart, as the long questionaire they made me fill out had one question about situational ethics that I flunked, big time.

it was a blessing I didn't get the job, though. really.

It's an experience worth having if you want to experience social-Spencerianism at the business-end, but better to be avoided at all costs.

Edit: as for the test, you always have to lie on them. Humans invent stupid rules and expect everyone to follow them absolutely - at threat of one's ability to survive actually.

General principles to keep in mind:

1> you represent the store, but you are worthless and replaceable to them.
2> money, the money and property of the company, is worth more than anyone.
3> if you get on the bad-side of any manager, quit before they invent false accusations.

I did a really bad and stupid job of shop lifting. Banned me from every Wal-Mart for life.

I offered to pay for the cheap item, I had the money on me. But they'd rather get a couple hundred $ and ban me losing thousands of $ from my business over my life time at the risk of losing some petty change every blue moon. So whatever. I'm happy to give other companies my business, I think they're better anyway.

I'm just curious...how do they enforce such a ban? If you pay with cash, how does a random check-out clerk know that you are banned?

It never occured to me to lie. I guess I wouldn't do that.

They don't really. I could go back in again, and have in other states when there was no other option nearby, without being noticed. But I figure if they don't want my money, I'm more than happy to comply.

Possibly facial identification software for their surveillance equipment. I don't know, when I have an imaginary spare $400 I'll try going to a Wal-Mart that nobody I know works at... NOT!

Guess not on the software idea.

Check the ban-paper anyway. The law that enables them to ban you is probably a state-law anyway. It is in my case.

I just took the security guys word for it. I'll check it out later.

If those people in Asset Protection or Loss Prevention ever get on the bad side of the higher-ups, it would be interesting to see their reactions -- and where they move so they can get a job again.

So why did you try to steal the item when you had the money to pay for it?

see? it's that situational ethics question they have on their pre interview questionaire. They want and retain people that make the rules apply no matter HOW silly they are in the long run!

I don't know if you're saying this for real or not, but, yes, there are some stupid rules which they hold as absolute and show no mercy on - such as the immutability of scheduled hours as randomly assigned by an ignorant computer.

For the rush?

Looking back it's kind of hard to say really, I remember thinking that I should take it out of my pocket and pay for it, but I didn't bother to once I got to the register. It was like I was in a dream just floating through. I was just in "Stupid" mode.

The cop was actually nice to me, and called the system "convoluted" which surprised me. Anyways, it was a stupid thing to do and I have no intention of repeating it.

I am saying it for real. Applying at Walmart with a degree in sociology was an interesting experiment. I didn't get past the 50 questions they ask you in some computer terminal back by the lay away department ( when they had them) that looked like a photomat. One question was real long, and described some one that had been tardy because of family problems, and if I had to fire this person for the tardies would I do it even if I knew the family problems had been taken care of? I said, damn straight I wouldn't fire him because he was a good worker and why make his life more of a living hell? ( well, actually they didn't have write in answers so I guess I said I wouldn't fire him)

well, I never got a call back, even when I stopped back in several times for an 'update.'
