I'm considering perhaps looking in to library science programs locally. The idea of a librarian sounds very nice to me, at least, a large public or university/research library. Quiet, surrounded by books and information, not too too many people to deal with. Is anyone on here familiar with Asperger's and librarians?

my mother was a librarian until she retired. she doesn't have asperger's but is something of a loner type. she loved it. i always envied her for being so happy about what she did for a living.

i think working in a library would be great. quiet, endless resources for information about your interests, everything is organized very specifically, and so on. interactions with the public would be limited mainly to people asking you questions you can look up the answers to.

I would advise against small town libraries. Those are the type where everyone knows eachother and the librarians are expected to be social butterflies. I think a bigger or more research type library would be good for someone with AS.

Remember you might have to deal with rude people still, talk on the phone, etc...

I would really love to work in a library. I wish I were. :(

Librarian is very often recommended for people with Asperger's. I wish I had my life to do over - I'd become a librarian.

Libraries are great places for Aspies to work, especially behind-the-scenes stuff like cataloging, technical services, interlibrary loan, etc.

It does sound like a good job. But you might want to check and see what the job prospects are like in your area. As far as I know, a lot of libraries aren't hiring now, because they're run by counties that are having budget problems. Hopefully, things would change by the time you have your degree, but it's worth looking into.

Yeah. If you want a job like reference desk, maybe, but remember, a lot of the jobs you could do as a career are rare, and you have to wait until people retire, then take their place. I thought of Library science too, but the only place in Arizona that offers it is U of A, and I don't want to move to Tucson. I could take it online, but screw that. ALSO, libraries are closing. Hard to compete with the internet.

Becoming a librarian is something I have considered very seriously. There are different types of librarians, and you should be aware that most of them do deal with people quite a lot. Being a librarian is a service job. How much one deals with people varies from one position to the next, though.

The only reason I decided against becoming a librarian is the prospects. It is said the prospects are okay because so many librarians are growing old and will be retiring soon, but this doesn't take into account the fact that Library & Information Science programs have become very popular over the last few years. The truth is that there is a lot of competition for library jobs. Additionally, many/most libraries are experiencing funding shortages and are cutting back on hours. A lot of libraries are also hiring library technicians in favor of more expensive librarians and are providing only part-time hours.

I don't mean to discourage you if it is what you really want to do. It seems like a wonderful profession and most librarians love their jobs. I only want you to be aware of the possible difficulties.

In middle school, I volunteered in the school library, and I quite enjoyed it.

I work in the Sound Archive department of the biggest library in Britain., It's pretty well-suited to my inetrests and my aspie quirks - I don't have to deal directly with listeners/readers, there are few unexpected challenges and my workmates don't think I'm a total wierdo just because I don't enjoy smalltalk and banter as much as they do.

My only worry is the looming possibility of redundancy, as my employers are poised to get rid of 215 staff (spread across all their branches) over the next two years due to government spending cuts, so kaybee is right insomuch as that there are hurdles you have to negotiate if you want to work in that area.
