I have some physical disabilities in addition to AS & the combination make it extremely difficult for me to find a job. The 1st job I had was a dish-washer & I HATED it. The 2nd job I had was doing floor cleaning at WalMart. I liked the job I was supposed to be doing & I took pride in it but I quit after 25 months because of problems with management. Shortly after I left; the department was dismantled & a contract crew who had been helping us out took over full-time so I think I was kinda forced out because I would of had problems working in other department due to my disabilities. The 3rd & last job I had was doing custodial stuff at a sporting goods store. I lost that after a couple months because I did not feel safe doing certain aspects of the job because I have a tremor disorder; I did not feel comfortable cutting boxes or climbing ladders at times. I tried to get the tremors treated & got sick from meds & was basically fired after being out for two weeks due to company policy. They said they would take me back if I reapplied thou.

I've been unemployed a couple years now & I've been putting in apps at most anything I think I might could do fairly well but I've been lucky to have one interview during that time. My Louisiana Rehabilitation Services counselor refereed me to a job placement specialist a while back & the direction we're looking in is custodial floor-cleaning stuff kinda like what I did at WalMart. It seem like the best direction to me because I have experience doing it & I did the basics very well except I did have problems doing some of the more advanced stuff but I could assist others who were doing it well. My family(especially my mom) keeps insisting that I need to do something better than that. When I ask what that something is; they tell me that only I can know so I have to decide for myself. If only I can know what that something is; how do they know that I need something better? When I was working I kept hearing about how I needed to do something better but now that I'm not working they are telling me that I need to try going back to WalMart or that sporting goods store. Then in the next sentence they tell me that I need to do something better than that stuff. This contradictory is extremely confusing :? One minute they say that I need to find a path in life that makes me happy & works for me but the next they tell me that I need to do something else instead. I'm not limiting myself to floor-cleaning stuff; if I can think of something else I might could do; I'll try but I am not sure what else that something is. I tried listening to my family & others when I was 19 & I took a coarse in something that I should not of been taking. I was not psychically or mentally cutout for that & it was a big inconvenience & expense for my family. I do not want to take risk & try going in a rout that I am extremely uncomfortable with again. No matter what I do I feel it is not good enough. My family will want me to do better or I will make things worse for em by going in a rout I should not be going. I know they have my best interest at heart & they think pressuring me will give me the push I need to be doing something but this contradictory hypocritical sounding stuf is N OT helping me one freaking bit

Either their pride is hurt when you do something they see as menial, or else they are concerned you will eventually find it insufficient or unsatisfactory.

Just be true to yourself.

leejosepho's comment is good, I think.

It's more important to find something you can do and feel good about than it is for you to find something that other people feel good about. You don't have to be combative, but do be assertive about doing what's going to work for you.

This probably won't make you feel any better, but I was probably 36 when people stopped asking me when I was going to get a "real job," by which they meant one that, according to them, wasn't "beneath" my level of intelligence and skills. I happen to like what I do, even though it isn't rocket science. It fits with what I can do well, and that's most important.

That makes sense guys. I think part of the problem is they don't understand my disabilities & things that are limiting me. They think I'm using that as an excuse to be lazy which is NOT the cause because when I was working at WalMart; I was working 55 hours a week when they let me because they were shorthanded. My parents also tell me that I can do anything I put my mind to & my problem is that I do not try. I know I do not have ambitious goals but I believe I'm being realistic.
