about time there was some good news on here so i was wondering how people have found the positives of aspergers have helped them in their careers
Focus
In plastering i found it a plus as i could use focus to do very good quality work quickly as i would focus on a job and not stop until it was finished and was able to charge a lot of money for my work as the builders would not have hold ups or dodgy work like some of the other blokes in the game who will remain nameless lol

stiking to rules
with the credit crunch, the building trade was dead and i started working the doors at a local nightclub and cos i would not take bungs from dealers to let em in the club owner was dead happy because he had no more licence hasstles from the coppers. he helped me set up my current firm and i have 35 lads working for me and the coppers know that our doors are clean so the club owners are happy and so r the coppers. all my lads kno that if i catch them taking coin to let in dealers they are sacked at once and i tell the coppers this means hat i can charge more than the other security firms

trust
be careful of this as it is a doublle edged sword! as a kid i used to help so called mates out in fights and get left holding the bag my probation officer got me diagnosed as aspergers and explained how it was getting me in2 trouble and to be careful who i trust i am now careful who i trust and have a marvelous crew of mates including a solisitor and an accountant who have given me loads of help over the years.

so as you can see aspergers is not all bad news.

i see a lot of negative energy on this site so can anybody else tell us how aspergers has helped them in life?

Mate

I agree with you about too much negative energy.

You are also right about focus being an asset. I am a panel beater and focus on a job to the exclusion of everything else which means fast high quality work. This means that I get heaps of work from the insurance companies as I have a reputation for value for money and the clients never complain about the quality of my repairs.

I employ ten blokes, a beautiful six bedroom home with a swimming pool, a 15m yatch and the wife drives a new merc and at school they classed me as special needs :D

I agree with you about trust as well as I got burned a few times when I was starting out.

I also agree with you about sticking to the rules as a lot of scams do go in my game on but the blokes who do them always get caught in the end as the insurance companies are not mugs.

I would also like to add that my ability to ask questions and think independently has allowed me to make a few innovations in panel repair that have increased efficiency and improved profits.

Thanks for this post mate and I hope that your boy does well at the boxing!

Good onya!

One of the things my psychologist told me when I was being diagnosed was: "You have the Aspie strengths".

I am good at research, at mathematics, at computer programming, at creative solutions, and at working away on my own - even in my own time when it captures my imagination. I like to teach myself things, I like to gather lots of stray information, I like problem-solving, and I like building complete solutions. I am logical, and may see things from a "different" viewpoint which other people appreciate.

I have tended to work in positions where I am the technical specialist or expert in a particular area.

Using those terms a bit loosely, I have had the same experience. Within a variety of work environments, my overall aptitude and problem-solving abilities often made me uniquely useful to a given employer ... but then that also went against me in situations where employers were more inclined toward just having "trained and certified 'robots'" (my term) on-staff.

I found being able to see how dis-similar things connect in some way to be a great asset especially when looking at workflow.
