I wasn't sure what to call the title of this thread, but I'm not a big fan of job interviews, mainly because of the lengthy application process that is now online, or as I like to call it, informal. It's hard to make an impression when you are just text on a screen, and I don't feel like it's worth my time to jump over mountains of s**t just to get 1 interview for a menial job that pays 8 bucks an hour for me to do mindless labor. I would much rather audition for a job instead of filling out 100 applications and get maybe 3 interviews out of it if I'm lucky. An audition is more like pro wrestling or stand up comedy, where you go out there and show them what you can do, instead of writing a controlled essay about how great you are, otherwise known as a resume.

So are there any other jobs that are more like an audition and less like an interview, where they ask you stupid questions like "Tell us a little bit about yourself" and "Why should we hire you?" and then tell you to come back in a week? It's not so much about the interview and the process that leads up to it, but the actual job itself. I need a job that is intellectually challenging, and the interview for the job will reflect the job itself. So something like a radio personality would be an example, because it's not the same old same old every day. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I need to come up with a list of jobs that aren't monotonous and boring.

We usually take an application, do a formal interview, then if the candidate seems hire-able do a paid working interview.

There is really no winning formula.

Job interviews are stressful.

Job auditions might be better to gauge your actual ability to do a job, but then you could have "performance anxiety."

I've always dreaded the idea of an "interview lunch" where they take you out to eat and discuss the possibility of working with them. It's never been offered to me, but when I'm nervous, anything I eat or drink will make me gassy (often belching), and as if a job interview isn't stressful enough (I don't eat or drink anything immediately before an interview), adding in the concern about social faux paus at a dinner table only makes things worse.

I don't want a winning formula as much as a job that is intellectually challenging, regardless of how difficult it is. I'm going to have performance anxiety at first; in fact, I'm probably not going to be able to successfully work a job that doesn't initially give me performance anxiety, because high risk comes with high reward, and I want a high reward. As long as I want the high reward, I'm willing the take the high risk.
