Changing jobs- success stories?

Hello there. Undiagnosed 36-year-old woman here. I'm feeling pretty stuck in my current job, and have recognized a need to make a change. The farther up the food chain I get, the worse I'm doing in my job. The more visible I have to be, the more I retreat. I have a mortal fear of public speaking, which is not doing me any favors. I do really well with projects with defined goals and end dates, but terribly with more nebulous requests from my boss. I could go on, but you get the idea.

I'm in the financial industry, so I think I have a good chance of parlaying my knowledge and skills into something that fits me better. I'm interested in hearing from people who have made successful transitions into more suitable positions or lines of work.

Anybody out there?
