Brown-nosing behaviour thoughts
One behaviour that I simply abhor in the corporate world is that of brown-nosing, a.k.a. "kissing up", "sucking up", "currying favour", being someone's toady or sycophant...I always believed in keeping my nose to the grindstone, doing hard honest quality work with attention to detail, so I really find- and feel- that brown-nosing is generally an NT preference.
I simply couldn't see myself fawning over my boss with phrases like "oh, that's a great looking tie you've got on (or great new purse....) - can I run and get you some coffee - you're a great source of wisdom and I always admire your insight..." pshaw. That stuff makes me gag. However, sometimes I find that certain narcissistic types expect it, and when you don't pick up on the signals or cues to flatter them, then they turn against you. This did happen to me once actually, and I'm sure it's happened to others (NTs as well, but I'd say Aspies are more vulnerable to it).
Here's the irony though: brown-nosing is generally considered a social faux-pas, a no-no as it labels you as a cringing toady who doesn't have the integrity to focus on a job well done (which in effect makes the boss look good). Maybe that's the key word- integrity - which Aspies tend to exhibit to a higher degree than most in the corporate world, whereas some people (NT) will throw their integrity out the window to climb the corporate ladder. Also, brown-nosing seems to be mostly a tactic employed by office bullies to advance (again, a bit of an irony) - the phrase I've heard more than once to describe corporate bullies is that they "kiss up and kick down". Makes sense, b/c the higher-ups cover their ass against harassment complaints, if they kiss theirs.
Yes, it sucks. Theory of Mind produces as much negative BS as it does positive cognitive empathy.
"I always believed in keeping my nose to the grindstone, doing hard honest quality work with attention to detail" -- I think you're on the right path and sympathize with your aversion to NT social BS.
