I plan to work at Hot Topic since I'm old enough, but I also need a backup plan or two. Where should I work that won't be bothered with the fact that:
1. I dye my hair unnatural colors
2. I cross dress
3. I have the attention span of a squirrel (I'm going to find a way to fix this though, WITHOUT meds)
4. I'm extremely calm

Except for newspaper delivery, working for relatives, migrant and some other farm jobs, there really aren't a lot of jobs for 14 year old's out there. I know when I and my siblings were job hunting as teens, you had to be at least 16 to get a job. I believe that is still true today.

Once you are old enough to start looking, I suggest you try retail stores catering to young people. Other types of retail stores and other types of businesses are unlikely to hire some one with weird hair, and who cross dresses, and who has a short attention span. The fact that your calm, though, should help where ever you land a job. I suggest you spend the next couple of years working on your attention span, so that this won't be a problem for you when you go job hunting at 16.

Don't be mad at businesses that won't hire a non-typical appearing person. If a business's staff look or act weird, it turns off the customers, who take their dollars elsewhere. That's bad for business. The owners make a living, and pay their personal and business bills out of the money they earn from their business, so they have to cater to the customers. That means most places prefer to hire people who look and act fairly normal.

The economy is pretty bad right now, and a lot of people are out of work. Businesses are more likely to hire experienced workers, since they can get them at lower rates of pay now. If you find that your appearance is making it harder for you to find work, you should seriously consider appearing more normal while at work. Try a normal hair color, but wear fun colored wigs after hours. You can also wear normal styles at work, and then change your clothes after hours. You would be able to fit in at more businesses that way, but still be able to be yourself.

Hmmm. Those fun colored wigs sound interesting! Maybe I should get one? :-D

There will be laws regulating the kinds of jobs you can do, and they vary by state.
