REALLY want to be fashion illustrator...even in bad times?

yeah, tough crapola this world is in right now but even to be a freelance illustrator for a political or natural
or ANY magazine/newspaper/publisher what have ya would be wonderful, as i am a young budding college art student who really wants to go somewhere in this U.S. of A. ya know? I would like a rewarding job, want to go to a decent place and make a decent income once i graduate. as much as i love fashion and want to get somewhere following designers all over, i doubt it's gonna work. i need someone to cheer me on.
so if someone has positive tips, advice, maybe a website i can look at or books to check out of the library pertaining to promising illustration/art/visual marketing (well, i really don't like that field unless that one's all you suggest)...please hand 'em all over.

I have just graduated from an art school and I now have a B.A.F. There are no job prospects for artists these days so that is why I'm doing design. From what I heard about design jobs in general are the long hours, skill is highly valued and there is a demand for them, especially web designers. The pay isn't as good as say an electrician or engineer you find but that is not discouraging for me.
