Down time is boring... write a book! write a poem, draw a picture, do soduku, crosswords, be prepared, design your ideal home, bedroom, think how to save the world, have time to dream, eat, drink, plan.... get another job?

Start a blog...that's quite easy to maintain from work during downtime. :)

I agree with Quixotic, start a blog! If you can tie it in with the field in which you work, even better. You might just snag yourself a raise in pay or a promotion.

Ask your boss if there is anything you can help out with. They will see you as someone who wants to contribute, and you may learn some new skills that get you a promotion or raise down the road.
