I did something really stupid
I want a job right now, but I want a real job right now.
One where you go there every morning and work 8 hours and at the end of the week you get paid a wage.
So the school bus company was looking for new drivers.
I applied for the job two years ago.
I passed everything - because they were desperate for drivers.
I flunked the hearing test and I couldn't afford to spend more money on a hearing exam - after flunking the free physical and spending a week of my time and gasoline and another week studying the CDL manual and memorizing all of the answers in the manual to go and take the test to get the permit.
So I dropped out of the class and looked for other opportunities.
They had all of these rules - where basically you were not allowed to infringe upon the students right to ride on the bus - even though they misbehaved and tortured the school bus driver.
You had to be like a traffic cop and search the bus twice a day for damage and lost items and kids sleeping in the seats and all sorts of stupid stuff. You had to clean and wash the bus for free and you had to inspect the bus daily for it's safe operation - like driving the space shuttle for $30.00 a day.
It wasn't worth my time.
So after pondering it for two years and finally getting my hearing checked out and passing a audiological exam - I go back hat in hand and fill out 14 pages of a job application.
Even agreeing to take a drug test and to be fingerprinted and have criminal background checks done on me and my drivers license and I had to drive all over town to find the address of every house that I had lived in since 1975 and list the names of everyone who lived with me - they call me today and say that my credentials did not check out and that they could not hire me.
NO s**t - like why do you think i put the name of a alcoholic and a reliefer on the application as my references?
I really didn't want the job, but I needed the CDL in order to find a better job.
They wanted me to sign commitment papers saying that I would drive for them for 120 days or else pay them $500 for the privilege of driving their school bus and using them to get my license.
There isn't 60 school days left in this year before summer.
They knew what they were doing.
When I hesitated and told them that I would drive for them, but I wouldn't sign any papers - they knew I would quit if something better comes along.
I have out over 100 job applications right now and I am looking for gainful employment.
They don't pay me to go to classes for a week or while they are training me for the next month or two - before I get my license.
They were trying to line up someone for next year.
How could I go all summer with no income coming in and wait until fall to make $150 a week driving a school bus?
It's like how do these people expect the rest of the world to get ahead.
Its like big business and people who works for the school districts and the tax payers wants these people who are willing to almost work for nothing just so they can get a cheaper rate on their taxes!
Its not fair that in a community where there is only 9000 people and 2000 jobs that not everyone can get a job where all they have to do is walk out their front door and drive a couple of miles and be at work and make a liveable wage.
I am so disgusted right now that I hung up the phone on the girl who called me back to say they couldn't hire me.
What do these people want out of me?
Do they want me to take my money out of their banks and hide all of my assets and be a bum and become a person who lives on public assistance the rest of their lives?
I don't know what else to do anymore.

Location: Most likely work. Sigh.
I just don't like having the door slammed in my face and I don't like being discriminated against.
If it was illegal to discriminate against a person like me, or to harass them while they are trying to work and do their job, just because they are different then most people - I wouldn't have a problem finding or keeping a job.
When I have to drive 40 or 70 miles one way to go to work, I get so darned tired after a couple of months that after a while I need a break and just can't do it anymore.
For me it is like turning on a light bulb and not shutting it off until it burns out.
The employer uses you to get jobs done that no one else is willing to do and when you get hurt or sick they don't need you anymore.
There is so much apathy because everyone is just out for themselves and they don't care who gets hurt or is discriminated against - as long as they are getting what they want and it is not being done to them. Little do they realize that once you are gone - the employer or employees will just do the same thing to the next person until they hire someone else from the buddy club.
The school bus training program is not the only source of CDL licenses. There are vocational training places, including truck driving schools that provide the training, so people can get a CDL license.
Also, this bus driver job is obviously not the job for you. First, you obviously don't want it, so don't go for it. DUH!! ! Second, there are real issues with this job that make it not fair for someone in your situation, so it is not a good match.
Check out the other CDL training programs instead. If money to attend is a problem, you can apply for a school grant or education loan. Some of these places will help you look for these funding sources, so you can attend their programs.
Good luck!

The schools here wants a minimum of $7500.00 to obtain a commercial drivers license.
Even when I contacted OVR two years ago, the most they would give was $5400.00 for one year of school.
Several of the local schools has already gone out of business due to a downturn in business in the marcellus shale natural gas industry.
Price of gas went down - so the rigs shut down.
I'm kicking myself because I put my last employer on my job application.
I worked really hard at that job and put up with too much - just to make $2000.00 and get hurt and end up spending what i made going to the hospital and doctors - just to find out that I need an operation.
I think that the goal here was not to become a truck driver - because I have ruptured discs in my back and I couldn't sit in a truck for 16 hours a day for very long, nor could i go back to manual labor. But to provide some sort of income while I looked for something better and to have something to fall back on and at least have some sort of income for now.
Even though they got smart and figured out a way to get you to go to their class for a week, pay for your own license and ride along in the bus with the driver for free for a month or two - until they feel you are ready to drive on your own.
When in all actuality - you will be working as a bus monitor for free. They had it all figured out.
I don't like being taken advantage of - that was why I told them that I wouldn't sign the agreement to stay for 120 days.
2 years ago - there was no agreement and they played dumb when I brought the subject up and more then likely - they figured it out that the people that they were recruiting were using them as much as they were using them and so they decided to get some kind of commitment out of the new recruits so they could exploit them.
Now it will take me another week to get to the point of where I will build up my confidence once again to start applying for another job.
