I am starting a job tomorrow and am really nervous

I haven't had a job in years and got this pretty easily. Culinary school is opening new employment doors for me but I have never had a kitchen job before. The job is prep chef at Apple-Bees and I really hope that I don't screw this up.

I like kitchen work, as service industry jobs go I think it's one of the best for an aspie. There are all kinds of weird characters who work in kitchens, and its often more relaxed/informal. Plus it's usually quite busy so there isn't much interaction of a purely social nature - or at least, not during a shift.

Kitchens tend to be more meritocratic than many other workplaces too, because everything is very interdependant and timing is so important. They can't afford to have a socially skilled but otherwise inept person around - although I suppose it depends on how crazy the lunch and dinner rushes are. The crazier the better, in some ways.

In zen simplicity, first day you want to get there a nice relaxed ten minutes early. And if they're not ready for you and even if they're not quite ready for you at your official starting time, that's fine. Even if it's the army slogan of "hurry up and wait," that's still fine.

And then maybe plan to treat yourself to something nice after your shift even if it's something as simple as a seeing a new movie.

Congrats on the job, I know many who are struggling trying to find work so you should be very happy. So relax and I am sure you will do great!

Nice work Arttrat. I really agree with edgewaters, the kitchen is about results... you can't sweet talk your way to a medium rare stake. As far as being nervous, remember that the kitchen of a restaurant is full of people who didn't want to get a traditional office job. It's a place where people who don't fit in...fit in. Jealous of your brevity.

I think part of it might be that the customers don't see you, but they put your work in their mouth. It's sort of like anonymous posting on the internet except it's going straight into people's bodily orifices, and you had better hope they like it, but you don't have to worry much about whether they like you.

Nice. I work as a dishwasher in a kitchen run by the county. It isnt that hard just try to keep up and not get in the way and you should be ok.

first day can be scary

i remember after 3 years break i joined a job and there was training session going on the trainer kept
picking on me because he found me different

i was about to resign i couldn't take the constant picking on by him......

but due to some reason i continued my advice don't worry just remain cool

Congratulations on getting a job. Good luck on your first day, I'm sure you won't screw it up. I don't think they will expect you to get everything right on the first day.
