intro...
Hi....I'm a 58 year old male and have not been formally disgnosed with Aspergers but after doing all the reading, it's a safe bet I've got.....I am a Special Education teacher by trade and have had numerous, painful job experiences and have also been fired (or just not rehired) many time.......it hurts. Funny, I know I can do the job at hand, but the problem is in the implementation......I have this sense of watching movie when I'm at work......I'm watching this guy struggle with how to talk and to deal with people and slowly go through unexplainably poor job performance until the end happens.....but of course the guy in the "movie" is me....I often wish I had a kind of job where I don't have to deal with people at all - like a remote forest ranger, a researcher, a computer programmer or a truck driver......as a teacher, I have to work with people all day (students, assistants, parents, administrators, etc)....but there's also this kind of "secret society" that happens at work - like there's this hidden code that they have access to but I don't....so, not knowing this secret code, I am forced to speculate about what is going on daily......it's brutal......I still don't know the connection between knowing this secret code and doing well at work, but I know there's a connection.....I do fine at the interview, obtain the job, and then watch helplessly as it all goes downhill right before my eyes.....and it's torture when I think to myself that my employer has such high expectations of me (due to to good interview) and then he/she just watches me over the months as I struggle......................oh well, I guess you get the idea...........glad this site is here....thanks
I feel your pain. I'm an adult school teacher, and interacting all day is uncomfortable and exhausting. I'm looking into changing careers. I don't suppose you could do the same? Or are you eligible to retire?
I wish there were a way we could "merge" experiences. I am researching now, but I need the classroom experience you have. If we could swap out, we could both be happy.
Have you considered teaching at the college level? The interactions are not as plentiful, and you still get to share your knowledge.
