IT is a highly specialized field, and jobs range anywhere from network administrator, hardware technician, database administrator, systems analyst, and software engineer--plus tons of others.
Education requirements can range anywhere from simple certifications to a PhD. It all depends on what branch of IT you want to do.
As far as opportunities in Seattle, I don't think it will be a problem.
