I have never been good at job interviews.

I had a job interview at a tech company in the Bay Area. I had to do a pre interview exam which I passed with flying colors. Once I was interviewing, I felt like I was clearly demonstrating my skills and what I could bring to the company, but I think I may have come across a tad nervous. I tried to prepare by having people ask me interview questions, but unfortunately none of the questions I practiced came up.

I'm supposed to hear back from them later on next week about returning for a second interview and I really hope I get it. I hope that next time around I can shake my nervousness and appear as confident as I really am. Do any fellow Aspies have any strategies for combating interview stress?

If the interviewer was reasonably experienced then they will be used to candidates being nervous and will generally disregard it. I've heard that from several experienced recruiters and I found that that knowledge alone helped me to be less nervous - funnily enough. Aside from that, it's just practice, I guess. The more interviews you go to the less scary they seem. I think some people even interview for jobs that they don't really want just to get better at interviewing - a bit extreme, perhaps, but it's an option.

I think everyone, Aspie and NT are nervous at job interviews.

I usually do OK at job interviews, although I hate them. I have one on Monday, which I am dreading. I know it's ridiculous, but I pretend I am acting. In my head I imagine that it is one of those videos they use to teach people another language (in this case English) which encourages me to speak clearly and precisely and to follow a basic script in my head. It has always worked OK for me, but it might be a bit too bizarre to work for anyone else!

Everyone is slightly nervous in interviews. I've sat in on a lot of interviews, everyone is nervous.

When asked a question, pause a moment before you answer.
